and need some help from the experienced off shore fly guys.

I started with the reel, a Hayden Yellow fin (earlier version of the Pursit IV).
I decided on a Heyden after taking my first SBFT with Riptide on a Pursit V last year. Then after some time, I just matched the reel to a Cam Sigler 14 wt. 3 piece 8'6" lifting stick.

Now need some help with completing the set up with the fly line and the backing? I have concerns with Power pro, or other braid seeing that it will cut you if your not careful. So braid vs. other backing and a recommended top line that I'd be able to cast for tuna and an occasional sail if I make it back to Florida or a dream trip to Baja.

Any recommendations gratefully accepted.

Hi Scruffy,

Give the guys at First Light a call (978)948-7004. IMO they'll tell you to use the 50lb power pro and RIO Leviathon (650gr) line. You could probably go with the bionic braid (softer) but why waste the $$$.

Goog luck and tight lines!

Norm

Anyone having any trouble with line failure due to rubbing in the guides and the Rio line? Heard a rumor that I tend not to believe (I love RIO lines) but have yet to substantiate it...

I had a problem with a running line cracking a few feet from the head loop. I sent a peice to RIO and they sent me a new line. In the meantime I had cut back the running line about 5 feet and attached a new loop. I still use that line and have yet to use the new one.

A good friend's Aqualux developed cracking at the junction of the head. But he uses it almost every day from the beach and he's a powerful caster.

Basically, I would not worry about it. If it cracks before you think it should, RIO will take care of you. FWIW, I like the way the line behaves - better than most others.

Thanks. I like Rio lines, what I use. I should have been more specific, the Leviathan. Heard some rumors that constant guide rubbing from longer fights with bigger fish were causing line failures with this line (but I guess it would happen with any line and this is what was used). I am sure Rio would replace it, but, if it fails on a fish its too late in my opinion. Just curious.

Went through the specs on various lines and seems like the SA "Bluewater" has the highest breaking strenght @45# as opposed to Rio @ 30+.

As far as abrassion the the first run is always going to put the most pressure on the line for wear, as it zips through the guides. I'm more concerned about the abrassion from the backing line on my guides.

I think RIO Leviathan is 65#

It is.

The lower weight Rio Lines are 30# or so. I picked up a 500gr Leviathan. If it wears, I'll let ya'll know. The rumor I heard was from some Florida Pro staff that mentioned failues asociated with longer battles with larger Sharks so I imagine the wear has more to do with the skin abraision and less with the guides.

See my post on this link about half way down, follow it, any questions, email me, it is a bullet proof setup, will handle any fish you put on the fly rod.

I use the PP on every rod I own, fly, spin, conventional. Sure it will cut you, but so will a piece of paper. Just treat it accordingly and remember a few simple rules and it will give you years of trouble free service.
