Does anyone know where one could net herring in the Boston area? I heard that people are getting them near the Charlestown locks. Is this true and are there any restrictions? Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

at the locks, you don't net them, you snag them. A simple rig with a weight and a treble hook is all you need. It is easier to see than to explain. I suggest a trip down there to check it out.

I know there are place at various points along the Charles where you can net herring. Well, not exactly true- I have spoken with people who have done this, but I am not sure exactly where those places are, since it is not something that I normally do.

Try the dam in Watertown square. There isn't much herring in there now as there was last week. It does follow the state rules for obtaining herring. There isn't enough cops there to regulate the run so you have people of all kinds (mostly unscupulous individuals).

It's also a little known fact that sometimes there can be a striper or two following the herring into the river.

Don't snag them - that'll injure them so you can't use them. Use a Sabiki rig instead - it's a string of 5 or 6 fly-style hooks, similar to a mackeral rig.

If you have kids, bring them along - they'll love it and will get hooked.

You can net them in Watertown at the dam on the Charles just up from watertown Square.

Any day except Tues, Thursday and Sunday, I believe.

I was there yesterday and caught my limit in about three scoops of the net. They were thick - very thick.

Only challenge is getting them to the boat alive! Some type of air bubbler is a must..
