I'll be there May 23-26. I know the island well and have fished it many times but any general late breaking info is appreciated. I'll be at Wasque and Gay Head for sure, reports or no reports ;-);

The fishing has really been becoming more consistant the last couple of weeks and the bluefish have moved onshore in full force. I fished quite a bit this past weekend (5/13 - 5/14). On Saturday I spent some time trying along State Beach and the bridges, because I had heard that some keepers had been taken on the fly. I fished both sides of the morning and evening tides with the flyrod, jigs, and poppers without even a bump.
On Sunday I fished the middle of the falling tide at the gut, which has begun producing fish with some regularity. I picked up a couple of 5-7 lbs. Bluefish, but the action was intermittant, probably because the fish were crusing up and down the channel looking for bait.
They opened Edgartown Great Pond on Saturday (5/13)and it usually takes about 24 hrs. for it to produce any fish, so we left the Gut to catch the falling tide at the opening. We got there and the birds were working and then the water started to boil with fish. The fish were working herring heavily on the surface. We had the place to ourselves and were catching Bluefish and Bass on every cast. We were catching Bluefish in the range of 8-12 lbs. and Bass ranging in length from about 26-32".
I have experienced some remarkable blitzes, but I have never seen so many fish in such a concentrated area before, the water was black with fish. I tried the flyrod a couple of times but the strong southwesterly wind made it near impossible to cast any further than 15-20 yards. My cousin and I even tried using a hookless popper to tease the fish into casting distance, but the wind and the surf made it impossible. We fished for two hours and left with the water still errupting with action.
Unfortunately the opening will be closed by the time you get down there, but all of the South Shore has been producing fish as well as all of the other popular haunts.
I will be in Maine the week that you are there, but if you ever get down to the Vineyard again send me an email and perhaps we could plan to meet. Well good luck and I would be interested to hear how you did when you get back.

I haven't been there since the weekend before last, but there were a lot of fish where the quansoo opening usually is ( closed now ). Probably still a good bet, but I'm sure that spots in the sound have filled up with fish too. I'm going out for the weekend and will post on mon.

Thanks for the info guys. I've driven to within a half mile or so of the Quansoo opening before, so I know where that is.
Any 2WD access to Edgartown Great Pond opening via dirt rd, or do you need 4WD over the beach to get to it?

There are no public 2WD roads that would get you to within a reasonable walking distance to the opening that I am aware of. Unfortunately, the land abutting Edgartown Great Pond is quite private and some even highly guarded. As I am sure that you are aware the best and easiest access is via a 4WD vehicle over the sand from the right fork parking lot in Katama. However, if you really wanted to fish the opening it is a walkable distance from the lot, which I have done before (1.0-1.50 mi.). Good luck and I hope that you have a great time!
