My wife and I are driving across country in about a week. We're planning to spend a day or two exploring Glacier. After reading that visitors can fish in the park without a permit, I decided to pack the 5wt. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where or how to target trout. I'm a salt guy, but I'd love to wet a line on a western stream. Thanks in advance.

this might be too late, but here goes. I spent 7 years in north central MT in shelby, MT. The fishing on the Blackfoot Reservation lakes is spectacular. the fishing in the park is poor at best. Most of the creeks and streams are closed to fishing due to recovery of bull trout. there are a few lakes in the park that have fish but be prepared to hike through some of the roughest and most beautiful country on earth. GNP does not manage the fishery in the park other than closing it. On the other hand Yellowstone Park takes an active role in the fishery and it shows. Get a guide and do the blackfoot res. or go over to the Kalispel side and get a guide over there do one of rivers over there where the state manages the fishery. And yes there are a lot of GRIZ there, I have seen as many as six in one day and as close as 20 feet while on a trail. I still have all my fingers and toes. hope this helped if not to late

Aside from the fishing not being the best in GNP I would say that only spending a day or two there is a big mistake. You would be better spending more time there as it is by far the most beautiful area of the US. If you had time I would then head down to the Yellowstone area to do the fishing. I fished the Madison and the Gallatin near Big Sky many times and the fishing was excellent, You can DIY the Gallatin in many areas near Big Sky but I would hire a guide as he/she will get you right to where you need to be without wasting time.
Again... 1 day in the GNP is like going to Disney for 2 hours.
