I have heard good and bad about trolling with 9500's on heavy rods. Any feedback would be appreciated. I have 2 with 300-400 yds of 50 Powerpro with backing.
Lures would be light squid, single cedar or G machines.
Just worried what a strike would do to a spinning outfit,a big one but still spinning.
Thank you

I run a couple 9500's in the spread also but haven't had a hookup on one trolling yet. This is my first year experimenting with trolling...gotta do something when the little ^%$$#$ wont show themselves.
After the hookup I have full confidence that they can handle tuna to 150-200#. I had one hold up twice with fish that size. If only I had held up....

I've trolled with them in the past , at the time it was all I had and I got a few,30-40lb'rs, they were fine. Set 'em up and drop them back and have fun with it. You could do alot worse....those are solid reels !!! You got the braid which will enable you to get a good amount of yardage, drag'em and be confident. If they get beat , then be sure it was a very decent foe!
good luck .

I'm new to the tuna game and I have a 9500 as well as a Spheros 1400 in the mix. They are my 7th and 8th rods in the spread. I run them on flat line clips closer to the boat. So far I've caught nothing on them while trolling. I also hope they have enough "UMF."

I do the same thing. Troll with a 9500 and a 7500 both with 50 powerpro.
The rods are pretty beefing casting rods.
I switch over to casting these rods if there is a surface feed going on.
Limited $$ prevents more rods/reels - need to work on this subject....

Thanks Guys, I was going to do one with a flat line with a strong rubber band. I dont have the clips. Thought that might absorb the the initial hit.
Do you set the drag light for the strike and tighten up or hit em hard?

Uncle Matt, was going to post this earlier. Great name on a great boat!

My drags are set a little on the light side. I watch the spool and tighten it a smidgen if I need to while clearing whatever rods are in the way. Keep the motor in gear and let the boat do the work. I'm sure this method will change when I finally hook a tuna on those outfits! --127-3-

caught this one last week trolling with a 9500, 50 lb braid with a 40 lb flouro leader, the reel did fine, definitely screamed when the fish hit, but thats all part of the fun! had it matched with a Tsunami 20 - 50 lb rod.
I wont even tell you what the fish hit, its almost embarassing!!
lets put it this way I forgot my trolling rigs since I was hoping to cast to surfacing fish and made due with what I had! thanks to Nat at First Light for selling me a few lures the day prior!!
shot of the 9500 at work also! don't know what Penn was thinking when they discontinued this model!!

Penn was thinking they have a better model, and they do out this coming year. Its sweet, granted I've never had one on the water.
Back the drag off a bit. Then fight by feel, requires a little more finesse but its fun I think. Add when needed, back off when needed. Never had any issues with a 9500, or even a 5500 with this method on fish up to 50-60lbs or so on 50lb braid/leader. Best we've had is half the spool gone on the 5500 with fish that size. You can whip tem pretty quick by feel and have them in the boat in a couple minutes with the fast line recovery. Look at it this way, most of the time you are fighting at 10-20lbs of drag on a spin rod anyway, no different than fishing near strike on a 30. Might want to get on the fish faster than you would with a 30 by trying to get a double. You never know what you have and if you'll need all that line.

I trolled a 9500 and picked up a legal size (last year) BFT dragging a popper behind the boat in big seas. Thought it was a blue but to my surprise it was a barely legal BFT and the only one I would land last year.

I hate conventional gear, and I troll with a penn 9500 and a spheros 14000 on two rods i know can handle fish up to 150 or so. you should have no problem UNLESS you hang a BIG fish, then you will wish had a bigg penn 130 or something.

Troll with my two 9500 on spinning outfits. Works fine in the pinch. I hooked a nice fish last year doign this and trolling of all things....a yozuri popper! I just throw it out when the fish are not showing real well for casting. I thinks it s a good way to kill some time and have a chance at a fish coming up. Obviously it works.

I have had good luck using the little orange "Pony" woodworking clips as flatline clips. They have them at Home Depot for about $4. Pull one of the rubber caps off of the handle and you will find a little hole in it. You can run a piece of 1/4" line between the lifting eyes on the transom and attach a few clips. Set your line out and pinch it in the clip. They release beutifully when you get a strike. :brow
