Just interested to know what knots people are using for tippet to fly, I have done some experimenting and just learned what I have been tying for the past 35 years is not the way to go. My first bonefishing trip resulted in only one fish hooked ( weather was a bust) this fish was lost due to a "bad" knot, stupid me!
So whats everyone using ?

I'm a UNI guy all the way. too easy to tie and works well in all diameters of mono.

Here's what I use for bonefish and other situations where I'm tying the tippet directly to the fly...

For a fixed knot the Palomar is the only way to go. It's damned near 100% if tied properly, and it's not difficult to tie..

For a loop knot go to a six turn Uni-knot.

The best references on the subject of knots that I've ever seen are by Mark Sosin. The book is Practical Fishing Knots by Sosin and Kreh, he is currently advertising a DVD on the topic - I'm not sure of it's title but it's probably on his website.

For a real eye-opener tie up a few different knots, secure the fly to a fixed object then pull SLOWLY until the line breaks, it will be educational....

Good Luck

In that same book mentioned above is the Lefty Kreh non-slip loop knot. I use that for 90% of my direct ties to lures & flies. Works well all the way up to 80# bite/shock tippets & leaders. And I second the Palomar Knot for tying to flies that don't need the freedom of movement provided by a loop knot.

I agree with GC about Lefty's non-slip loop knot. The loop allows much more motion from the fly. There have also been times when the chompers come by and the double line has saved quite a few flies.

Uniknot because I can tie it without glasses. I also like the Palomar knot but it uses a lot of line getting the loop over the wings of the fly.
