Man it seems like have the worst Luck
I just found out Ross is going to discontinue the Canyon series of reels. My boat is loaded with Stu Apte Big game fly rods and Ross canyon reels In my opinion the best saltwaster setup I have ever fished. WTF why do these Mfg discontinue the good stuff. before that my boat was loaded with Redington DFR's also good rods and before that Powell axs Good rods but crappy company. all discontinued. I think I had Gloomis nauticos before that. Its gets tiring trying to sell four rods and four reels every two years to keep current gear on the Boat. I'm going to get another canyon and Im still trying to find a backup Stu apte 9wt. Im not switching again these setups work to good to part with.

I'll tell you exactly why Ross would consider discontinuing their Canyon reels......if you own one, and use it in saltwater, you would know from experience that the maintenance, which they say is minimal, is maximal. If you fish over 150 days a year like I do, you will find that soaking your reel, disassembled, in a bucket of water for 20 minutes, after each fishing event, gets to be a big PITA. This is what Ross Reels says is what we should do after fishing in saltwater, each and every time. For me, it's a pain. I don't have to do this with any other reel I own. I just soap and water and rinse them and the drag is fine. With the Canyon reel, it isn't fine. The drag gets corrosion. Ross services the reels quickly and returns them promptly, free of charge, but to ship a reel costing $490 or so with insurance amounts to several dollars, maybe twice a year? Shouldn't be. I think Ross is making a good decision discontinuing these otherwise fine reels and they should work on making this fine reel saltwater-proof. I'm keeping mine because they are really great, if you fish from a boat and don't get that reel wet.

ROSS is coming out with a new LA reel. The specs and a pic of it is on their site. Looks nice a bit like the Tibor QC.

The new ross series is called the Monentum series it is a large arbor reel that has slightly greater capacity than the BG series, it also has a carbon fiber drag system with basically the same price points. They will supposedly be available in October

It says on the RossReel website that the Canyon reel has been discontinued but doesn't mention the Canyon Big Game series which is what I believe you're using on your boat and which is the model I have. Perhaps a call to Ross would clarify if the BG has also been discontinued to ease your concerns.

I dont do anything to my Canyon's I leave the rods rigged hanging on the Gunwalls I hose the the reels down with the boat and thats it no problems bo maintenance. I think they are great reels.
Im amazed at the Know it all attitude found on this site. Flysully if you got an opinion state it. Why the condesending attitude. If we were standing face to face Ill bet you would use a more polite tone in your statement.

My comments were made regarding not only my problems with the Ross BG reel but many others' problems with the maintenance of the reel. I had an opinion regarding the reel and I stated it. For some reason, you think the negativity was directed at you. It was not. Check your pms which is where you should have aired your feelings, not on this forum.

This is not meant to offend but I don't quite get why people who fish over 100 days a year try to save a couple of bucks on inferior gear. The Ross Canyon is a fine reel, but not a workhorse by any means. By spending acouple bills more you can have a matainence free reel. Tibor, abel, islander, whatever. You have to try and kill those reels. I have an Islander that is like 10 years old. I've "washed" it like one time. Now all I do is WD-40 and grease it up at season's end. I have abels and Tibors. Frankly, after Islander discontinued the LA-W series, I won't own anything but a Tibor.
Sure it cost over 5 bills but they are indestructable and timeless (to adress the concern of having current gear).
Speaking of discontinuing gear, I understand Abel is going to a double dog on all Super series reels.
PS I've sold many Ross canyons to those new to the game and though they don't come back with too many complaints, when they do come back it's from poor maintainence and abuse.

personal witness to two ross reels, by different owners fishing the same conditions. both froze solid at 20 degrees F fishing the salmon last winter. good tackle review on the church hole that day.
