a very knowlegable person told me today those spheros' havent been holding up.

whats the story on them. Anyone clamp the drag down on one of these and let it smoke? how's it holding up?

it would be going on my second st. croix, which is now reel-less. the other has a 9500, but i'd like to try something different if its gonna hold up.

I know the casting topwater bite has been somewhat off, but has anyone had a rotor busting run on one of these?

I dunnoh ... my brother has 7 or more toona on his 14000 FA Spheros and it's fine. Maybe they had a bad run/lot this production year ... ?? In regards to drag, it'll put out up to 25 pounds or so, but we're using 50# and put them @ 14#s.

I would think any reel would likely smoke if/when stoked too high on the drag when the line test it was designed for was greatly exceeded.

I just got 3 new 950ssm's they are much more refined than the old 9500. My sources say they are just as solid, but nicer.

My Spheros have been great on 20+ Big fish (50lbs & above) this year. Who told you that they have failed?

well, that settles that, i think im gonna try one.

I'd have no problem naming names, but i'd rather keep this one quiet. They run a respectable place, and dont deserve the flame that some thread readers may throw thier way.

I have 2 14000's and , as I have had 3 50#'ish fish on them ,I was impressed with all aspects. Only got one over the gunnel, but the losses were probably "operater error --124-3 " . Good luck with 'em!

I actually just had the bail give out on a Spheros 12000 on Saturday. Probably overly excited anglers working the bail to hard while closing it after casting into pod after pod of tuna.

Ive been happy with the reels and have two 5000's that have been in service for 4 years, and a 14000 going strong in its first season.

The Spheros 12000/14000 is the reel of choice for the bargain minded angler in Australia and Japan.

They add a couple of mods to it and use them for GT's and Dogtooth. They hold up quite well.

You should be able to find them on EBAY for under $100. One of the best bargains for a quality spin reel avaialable.

in the mail this morning. I dont know about under 100 bucks, cause I've been looking for a while and havent seen them advertised lower than 129...Just checked ebay and theres none currently listed and pickings have been slim for about a month on em. Google showed a couple places for around 130 but none of those places had them in stock. Fishermans outfitter sells em for 149. Im sure if you dig around you may find better I just got impatient.

I got it in a combo through ebay and payed 169 for it and came with a serious meat stick (not actually a bad rod for 30 bucks, but not quite the way it was descibed...ie:good plug to visit your local tackle store unless you know exactly what your getting),

The place has a site that list the reel online for $139 with free shipping and line.
