I am starting to plan a trip to one of the less visited out island. At this point acklins is a strong candidate. I was wondering though how unreliable bahamas air is. I am used to traveling outside the US and understand that things might not run like clockwork but there are only two flight a week to acklins. Are flights regularly cancelled? Is it just an issue with planes running off schedule? I go to belize and one of th things I love is how well run tropic and maya air are. Any advice on traveling to acklins or the out island would be appreciated. Thanks much, Sam.

A "real"name would be nice as I hate corresponding/replying to "handles"
Bahama's Air as well as "Southern Air" cancel flights for basically one of two reasons...#1 Weather...if the weather isn't condusive to flying...they don't usually go. #2 is "Lack or absence of of bookings" for that particular flight.
Other things to consider...If the flight is "overweight"...typically baggage preference is given to "Islanders" over tourists. So...if a local is bringing 120lbs of frozen meats home to stock their freezer...they'll leave your rods and reels behing for the next/or later flights.
This is just reality and in no means is meant to put you off booking with BA!...every experience I've had with them has been positive to date!

I have flown Bahamasair 4 times in the last 5 years to Out Islands including Acklins and have not had a problem either schedule wise or with my luggage due to a Bahamasair screw up. Did arrive without my luggage once but that was American Eagles fault. I carryon rods, reels, lines, tippet material and a change of clothes just incase. Also split flies and between your bag and a travel companion so they have a better chance of making it. Made it for 4 days on Inagua with the carryon gear and had a great time anyway. I found out that I didn't need all the gear I always pack. The only thing I missed was my flats boots but my running shoes worked well enough.
Just do not schedule a return flight out of Nassau too close to your Bahamasair arrival in Nassau incase the flight is running behind schedule. I usually allow about 3 hours if I can.

I have never had a flight canceled but had quite a few late.
I still Remember what one of the girls at the ticket counter told me.
"If you really don't care what time you get there, Fly Bamahas Air" :)

I've flown BA several times. All in all it wasn't a bad airline. My buddy who flew them regularly for several years called them Mama Pajama airlines. His main complaints were unprofessional attitudes and late or cancelled flights. In cancelled flights I mean they decided to use our scheduled plane from San Andros to Nassau for another airport because that flight was more profitable. I experienced that once.
I prefer Western Air now and plan to fly them to Andros this March. They have fewer issues and are relatively ontime.
