Yesterday a friend and I were doing some on trailer adjustments to a motor on the Concord river in Bedford when he dropped his keys overboard. I went back today with a fishing rod and a magnet to try and recover them. I started fan casting with the magnet around the boat ramp and low and behold I caught something. Unfortunately, it turned out to be an 8" nail. Another cast, another big nail, then another and another. Then the action slowed to a nail every 3 or 4 casts. When I was done I landed at least 40 of the big nails, a bottle cap, several washers and a tie down hook, no keys.

The funny thing was, when the magnet would click onto a nail, it felt very much like a bass picking up so I had to fight the urge to set the hook. Also, while I was in the middle of this blitz, two other board members called to give me reports.

I guess when they tore down the old bridge, a lot of the materials made it into the water.

If you trailer your boat to fish the Concord river you may want to be careful when launching and retrieving.

I've always wanted to do that at a busy ramp sometime and see what came up. I vaguely remember someone saying that lifting magnets were not allowed in Quabbin because they used to practice bombing there years back...

Too bad about the keys, but I certainly hope you were trying to grab the key ring, because keys are made of brass, which obviously is not magnetic.

Chuckster,

I thought about that so I used my key ring as a control before I made the trip to the ramp. 2 out of 9 keys were attracted to the magnet plus the rings and a clip. I stuck the keys to the magnet and they held on well enough to lift them so I figured it was worth giving it a shot.

Hows the family?

Dennis,

Family is well, very well, thanks for asking. Finn turns 17 months tomorrow and he's quite the bruiser - into 24 mo. clothing now. His vocabulary is growing daily... he knows that "Dada" goes out on the "bo" to catch "ish"...

How's your little one? How old now?

Chuckster,

My son is awesome, he is a little ove 13 mos but a handfull. He has been walking for about 1.5 months and has a mouth full of choppers like a great white. As for vocabulary, he knows momma, dadda, no, and what a dog says.

Also, he seems to like boats, water and all of my fishing rods.
