Okay here's my problem. I have to plan a trip to the tropics for my girlfriend and I this spring. She is an avid flyfisher and enjoys the outdoors, fishing beside grizzlies is not a problem. She doesn't need to be pampered at an expensive resort, but........ It will be her first time in the tropics and she's dead set on spending some time laying on the beach. I'm trying to find a spot that she won't get eaten alive by sandflies on her first big vacation, next time she's on her own ;) . Belize is obviously out. Mexico is a possibility. Where can you get good beaches and still find relatively unmolested fish?

She's an aivd fly fisher? Doesn't mind fishing next to grizzlies? Does she have a sister?
Okay, got that out of the way- simple- Eleuthera. Good numbers of fish, fairly easily accessible (once you get there) Prices are OK. Do a search on this site. I would highly recommend. --127-3-
I'll second Eleuthera. But Cat Island, Anegada, and the Abacos also merit a look.

I was eaten alive with sand flies on Anegada. Off shore no problem, but onshore  Maybe on the windward coast you could escape from the little bastards.

I stayed at Unique Village in South Palmetto Point, right on the beach Atlantic side, OK food, nice room, close to everything. Check out Vince Tobia's site cattaragus outfitters dot com- He can set you up with a package deal- room, meals ( which I would forego- DIY after all) and a rental car for about $1000.00 for 5 days. The Big "E" is a blast. :-% and I went alone...

kamalame cay on north andros is a remote all inclusive romantic spa oriented getaway with excellent bonefishing to joulters cay which is a terrific stupid big bone target area. there is diy fishing on inside lagoon flats and just short walk to front is semi private beach villas with all the peaceful romantic getaway amenities. just went there for honeymoon and it was very slow pace, exclusive and romantic. did i mention the big stupid bones available to you. it is more of an opulent feasability but im not sure of your price-point range. it made a perfect first week of our honeymoon. check out there site, pm if you have any questions about it specifically. but with the right girl as it sounds you have, anyplace can be good.

Thanks for more info. Normally I would just take her anywhere, she's pretty outdoorsy. But she has never been to the tropics and dreams of laying on the sand with her toes in the water. I'm now leaning towards Cuba or the South Pacific.

Spoil her and get maxime Brownie Points. Take her to Cayo Largo Cuba stay at Club Sol superb all inclusive resort. Go to Cubamania web site (fish Cuba)for information regarding fishing without using Casa batida fishing lodge.
Recomend the Lodge expensive but worth it.
Enjoy

I agree with Peanuts for point making with your girlfriend, consider Cuba. Would she like a private cabin aboard a vessel, her own beaches and a satisfied boyfriend from catching plentiful large bones and tarpon everyday?

Vieques-great fishing and many great beaches. Just enough "Other activities" to keep her from getting bored with the fishing.
Norman's Cay- most beautiful island in the Bahams-no guides and only one small hotel. Lots of walk and wade bonefishing.
Agree on Little Cayman
Andros has enough bugs to lift up the island and fly it to the pacific-Great fishing though.

I would highly recommend taking your girl to Los Roques, Venezuela.
Most importantly, the Bonefishing is incredible. I have been there 3X, twice with a girlfriend and the other with a friend and his girlfriend. No problems.
There are very few bugs. You can wade all day casting at bonefish, blue runner, Jack Creval, Mackerel, etc... all from the shore. Guided trips are nice because you can acces the skiffs, but they are not necessary to catch fish.
Here is how it works... Fly into Simon Bolivar International Airport in La Guiara, stay overnight, take a cab to the national airport at 5 the next morning and hop on a 1 hr flight to Los Roques ($100 round trip). Go check into one of the Posadas (I suggest Gremary). You can fish on the main island but you should have them take you to a nearby island via boat (included in hotel stay) They set you up with ice chests and umbrellas you provide the beer and rum.
The best part about it is that when the honey gets tired of fishing you can stick a stiff rum drink in her hand, direct her to her lawn chair, and continue fishing. She gets drunk and tan while you fish. While you are fishing you check out all the amazingly beautiful topless Venezolanas and Italians. Then you take your sunburned honey back to the hotel and have another rum drink.
Also, great snorkeling, etc. Huge Bonefish!! Lots of them.
I have the phone numbers and email address for Gremary Posada and a very well respected flats guide named Elian... if you decide to go.
Good Luck.

I would definately like your contact info. Sounds like the trip for us. I have thought of Venezuela before but somehow forgot all about it. I would like to pick you brain for other info as well.
RS,
Have wanted to go to Los Roques with my wife for several years, but have heard getting there is sketchy/not safe. Was this your experience?

GCW,
No doubt about it... The biggest deterent to Los Roques is getting there. If you can do it, try flying into La Guaira overnight so that you don't have to stay on the Mainland. If you are not too budget minded, there is a Hilton close to both airports. I've always stayed at the "budget" hotels.
La Guiara is dangerous, dirty, and hectic. I would suggest making reservations at one of the Posadas in Los Roques, they usually have some kind of contacts (taxi drivers, other hotel owners) who will meet you at the airport and get you to a hotel safely.
Try and learn some Spanish...
