I don't usually post what I caught, but this is an exception.you'll see why.
fairly slow morning on the bank, arrived at 5:00 ,headed off away from the crowd about 8:30 to deeper water. start to see what turned out to be a smokin' 6 hour, on and off surface feed.first I've seen this year. pulled a couple hooks, had a bunch of fish boil on, smash, chase,etc.. the homemade metal I was throwing. clearly saw three fish chasing it on 1 cast.there were some kahuna's mixed in. saw some that went well over 100. I finally get tight and right away I know I've got a big fish.
Fast forward 1 1/2 hours .hooked this fish at 10:30 it's now noon. my buddy is sitting along side, 10 feet away, in his boat, watching the fight .he knows it's a big fish and he wants to see it.I'm in the bow and the fish is starting to do his circles.I can taste the sushi. my buddy is ordering which steaks he's going get. I look over, I can see the fish. and all of a sudden I can see something else too . a huge white shadow appears, heading strait for my fish! I think ,Shark! it's not going to chase my tuna, you gotta be kidding me! yup heads right up and EATS MY FRIGGIN TUNA-- WTF !my buddy yells "hey do you see that, it's a great white! I yell, I know he's got my friggin tuna. this thing was 20' if he was a foot.He was right under my boat and I saw him as clear as I see my feet. I thought, great white before my buddy said it.
POP! --124-3 game over .I stood there with my jaw dropped pizzed and awed at the same time. DID THAT REALLY JUST HAPPEN ? of all the way's I can think of to lose a big fish this really wasn't one of them. what are the odds?oh well . maybe I can put one in the boat tomorrow.

Great read! Sorry about the tuna man.:(
Damn sharks, have no manners. They don't even use dipping sauce or wasabi.

I've seen hammerheads do it before on blackfins but that doesn't even hold a candle to a great white on a bluefin.

Tommorow you say. :brow

Awesome slice of nature there,

let me be the first to say it and get it out of the way "you're gonna need a bigger boat"

That's a bummer, man, but where's the pics? Don't you have a head on a hook after that? Call me wierd, but I'd try to keep the shark around long enough to take some pics. And remember, you need something in the foreground to give it some scale...

... a memory of a lifetime. I'd rather lose a tuna that way than having a crappy knot fail...

I thought the same thing. if you have to lose one. I can't think of a better way.

kevin.I was fighting a tuna when he showed up. and he ate through the line (no head) disappeard seconds after.

That.is.awesome.

And to think, somewhere today at that very same time someone was wondering if they could sink a putt...

I've got to go with Chuckster & JJ on this one...

What an awesome display of nature! Having a big White pick you clean is definitely one heck of sight to remember. I've had many black & yellowfins get gobbled by lesser sharks down south, which is pretty lame, but to see a white eat Charlie at you feet is definitely a whole different level of carnage.

Sounds like the Mayor better hire Quint!

Well you got my heart racing.

You're so lucky to get to experince that firsthand... especially from the deck of a boat. :brow

So how does a white eat? Chop the tail and come back like a mako, or just one big gulp and gone?

The Discovery show on the Farallon's whites shows them cutting seals off; letting them bleed out; then chowing down on the bled out carcass...

I would imagine a shark that size eats 60" bluefin as an appetizer, much like we would a scallop wrapped in bacon. One bite. Then looking for more.

Where did this happen, there were some postings of at least two great whites off of Stellwagon in the past weeks one 14 footer & a 20 footer?

Just curious? and hoping someone gets some pics of these beautys.

I saw a 15 footer at the BB several years ago. I was up in the tower and got a great look at it right along side the boat. Huge fish. I think there are more great whites around here than people are aware of.

Happened again yesterday, a guy relesed a tired 42" fish and three seconds later a white came halfway out of the water to eat it behind the boat. don't go in the water!!

I know theres been sitings of whites around but thats awesome..although i believe the NMFS has strict guidelines about livelingin bluefin.

lost a kingfish to a hammerhead once (pretty common occurence I understand) made a heckuva run for about 7 seconds.

BTW congrats on the fish too.

Anybody have any idea if it would be legal to keep a mutilated fish? It would seem a shame to throw back a substantial fish that would have been legal just because it is missing its tail.

ruge13
09-18-2006, 08:40 PM
Yep, ain't legal. They have no way of proving you didn't mutilate the fish.

Too Fly
09-18-2006, 09:19 PM
Well for one, you'd have to have a really big mouth in order to get around that forked tail. And B, I would think the "bite radius" (pseudo Jaws ref.) from a human would be very different from a Great White's.

Is it ever legal to use a tuna head to fish for a shark?
Seems like that would be excellant.

you would't have wanted to hook this fish. I don't believe there is a rod and reel made that could handle it.

"swim charlie swim......can we go home now" (after the mrs's roast was used for bait"

ever read the article of the guy trying to catch a great white on fly... i remember reading it somewhere...maybe fish and fly circa 2004? he had a custom size 18w with some kind of flesh fly he spent ungodly amounts of money tring to bait and swich to some sappy shark in NZ.

i think we should get ben gardner and his gang out there for a good ol reel time- amity shark hunt. whos gonna bring the rifle, the air tank, the piano wire?

Hooper: That's a twenty footer.
Quint: Twenty-five. Three tons of him.
***
Quint: [seeing Hooper's equipment] What are you? Some kind of half-assed astronaut?
***
Quint: Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down to the pond and chasing bluegills and tommycocks. This shark, swallow you whole. No shakin', no tenderizin', down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

better the shark got it then rather than while you were reaching over the side of the boat to wrestle it in, how much would that have sucked!!
