Am considering trip to Nicaragua somethime this winter. Am looking at Rio San Juan area. We want to do a day or two of offshore and another couple of tarpon, snook, etc.
Would appreciate advice on:
best month between November and April
guide/tour company advice
buying a package vs. just going and booking a guide on location
is there a better place?
Thanks for any and all input.

Rio San Juan is a long, winding, and bountiful river to fish. there is a good all inclusive lodge,, Monte Cristo about 20 miles down river. another 15 or so hours down river is San Juan Del Nortre,, a backwater full of the fish. if you play it local, sary local you can hop the public ferry that plows the river everyday to El castillo(ask for Pina) and fish around this region, and then jump the twice weekly 12 hour trip to the coast and catch snook in the most abundant place, plus offshore if you can muster it. you could go just south of the boarder to CR and do the all inclusive,, but Nica is where it is at and if you want to rough it a bit, take the local transport,, no worry and toucans and sloths along the way are well worth the 17 bucks or so.. let me know if you wanr more info... Hi,
I found this old thread and wanted to ask about San Juan Del Sur.
I'm going to be backpacking down through Central America - Mexico all the way to Venezuela, and this will be one of the places we'll be staying.
Can anyone tell me a bit more about the fishing there?
I'm going to have an 8wt with me.
I'm hoping to do as much as I can on my own without a guide.
Is this a possibility? What kind of fish would I be targeting?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
