yamame

Hi all. Nice forum here.
I'll be spending about 2 weeks in the Yucatan in mid-late December. We'll be staying in Xcalak for 9 days. Any information on the fishing down there would be greatly appreciated.
But my more pressing question is what we should do with the rest of our time. My wife wants to check out Tulum and Coba. I'd love to visit the ruins, but I also want to maximize my fishing. Is there any decent fishing from the beach near Tulum? I know it's not too far to the Boca Paila bridge where I hear there is some wading access. Where else might be worth looking into? Does anyone have any leads on nice places to stay?
Thanks.

Hi Yamame,
Try and get your hands on the June/July 2006 edition of Saltwater Fly Fishing Magazine. There is a nice article on do-it-yourself fishing in Xcalak Mexico, and the author provides some good information for lodging, guides, food, etc.
Question about your handle: Are you in Japan and do you fish for yamame?
Thanks,
Count

Thanks Count. I'll try and get my hands on that magazine.
I lived in Japan for a while and loved to fish for yamame. In my opinion, they're the most beautiful trout in the world. There is some cool flats and mangrove fishing over there in the southern islands as well. No bones, but lots of jacks, pacific tarpon, trevally, cudas and what not. As you can tell I'm itching to get back.
Thanks again.

Bright and brighter. The guides were very big on hot pink, orange and very flashy puffs. The bones were too. Larger snapping shrimp style patterns were good too. Bones were not too picky.
Merkins for the permit. Many of the permit are bit on the smaller side, but, they seem to eat here better than other places I have been. You'll likely even have a shot at a whole school of them.
Forget the heavy leader in the pond if they bring you in for tarpon. They aren't big enough to need it. Cockroach worked for me there.
Pack a steel leader and a cuda fly if you're inclined to. Saw a monster hanging on the edge of a flat there. Didn't have any luck with him, but, the thought of what would happen if I did was scary.

The water at the Tulum ruins is DEEP. However, having done some "resort fishing", deep water gotcha patterns and a lot of blind casting has produced
bones, bar jacks, and some strange spicies. The biggest problem is cuda's.....
they will put a hurting on your fly box......after 2 lost flies I rig up wire/cuda
pattern to "get even" with them !!!
