Flew in from Colorado for a week of fishing, and met my son who came down from college in Rhode Island for the weekend. Got a late start after gasing up the boat etc and finally got out on the water around 10am-a little windy and sloppy, around 2-4ft especially around the point. Didnt see anything at Shag, nothing at the point(except 100 boats livelining porgies and trolling for bass) and then continued around the south side. Finally found the flyfishing fleet and scattered albies about 1 mile west of caswells. Tough fishing.....just too many boats on too few fish........didnt stay long. Lots of small pods of fish coming up all around-surprisingly didnt see anyone hook up, but I'm sure that plenty of fish were caught. Would love to know what happened early in the am if anyone was out there? Also, saw a number of boats near shore which made me think some bass were popping up from time to time....we looked for awhile but gave up and headed back to the point.
Eventually made the decision to try outer shag and then head to Gardners. Turned out to be a good idea as we found plenty of ablies eating close to shore on the north side of the island. Eventually we moved towards the Ruins and then towards Plum Island. On the north side of Gardners, it was pure albies-nice ones around 10lbs, then a mix of albies and blues as we worked from school to school heading north. The only fly that worked for me was a Rhody Chovey (size 4), as nothing in pure white seemed to work at all. Had good fishing from about 1-4:30 PM....total count was 6 ablies and about a dozen bluefish. No albies on the spinning gear(deadly dicks) only bluefish.
Sunday am was a blowout with a massive thunderstorm blowing thru-may get out this afternoon or try some surf fishing on the southside around dusk. Fishing buddy coming out from colorado tonight, so should be on the water everyday for the next week-will post reports.
