I am going to be in Oyster Bay this weekend w/ a bit of free time to do some fishing. Is it worth it to pack the gear for the flight? Any suggestions on area to do some wading? Fly suggestions?

Cold Spring Harbor, adjacent to Oyster Bay has been fishing pretty well from what I've heard, especially at the south end towards the Lab property. Big blues and schoolie bass along the weed lines. I imagine OB is fishing the same. Parking access can be tough, you have to get creative. Early am's/ eve's are best. Have some topwater stuff, Crease flies/ Gurglers, and some deceivers, clousers in Olive/ White and Chart/ White.

Sorry I can't get more specific but I'm out of a boat two harbors over. (Huntington). Hopefully, others will reply with more specifics. You might want to call Orvis Greenvale, The Camp-Site sportshop in Huntington Station,
Northport Rod & Reel or Oyster Bay Marine Supply for better direction.

Hey Brushfly,

Is the news about Cold Spring Harbor reliable? Sounds great. Perhaps I should launch my kayak in the harbor and paddle out to the lab and fish the shorelines this coming weekend.

What exact have you heard......like time or tide? Any news is appreciated.

Howie

Howie,

Only from what I've read and some PM's from guys I know. As you know, back near the lab it gets really shallow or mud at lower phases of the tide so I would think you want to be there near high water which unfortunatly? is around noon this coming weekend.

Locally, Wincoma is still the only semi-reliable spot right now. Been running all over the bay and harbors for slow goings of late. Some decent top water action behind the Island way back in N-Port harbor. You can launch at the Scudder Ramp. I fished it Sunday no dice- crease flies, clousers, but others I know hit some schoolies and bigger blues on pencils in the area. Excellent Kayak turf IMO.

that whole neighborhood is always good, especially this time of year... tons of schoolies, some bigger fish, lots of bluefish... sometimes albies or bonitos push thru... just be careful parking, those neighborhoods are really chi chi and you will probably be ticketed.

The info posted above is on the money. The area is terrific for a kayak. As for bonito you would have to paddle out towards to mouth of the harbor to get a shot at them. They won't come deep into the back. Be very careful where you park the cops like to write tickets in that area.
