Wind tonight, 20-25mph, with gusts that had to be pushing 40mph, s/w. No mosquitos tonight. :brow Even though the tide was pushing against the wind, could barely keep in contact with the bottom with a 5oz head.
A rough 4 hours. (#$119) Only a few more weeks to go. --124-3

I took the night off, Bob. I've tried fishing your east UDL in that heavy s/w crosswind many times before. The bottom might as well not exist for all I can feel. The only time I know it's there is when I lift the rod and feel my jig hung up solid on something I never felt

Doesn't sound very good this weekend....but were coming down anyway. If things don't pick up, this may be the last canal trip of the year.

In fact, next weekend is the World Series of Racing @ Thompson International Speedway....the best racing show on earth. I gave up my Cup tickets, and I go there instead, every year (fall canal fishing isn't very good).

Then maybe Oswego NY. after that....if I still have the ich' to hook up!

This could be one of those 1-2 day fall runs where everything breaks loose suddenly and ends suddenly before anyone even knows it, (on a week day, during work hours of course).

Starting to feel like steelhead weather out there. But I'll change things up a bit and give the dawn tides a try this weekend.

I'd sure like to hear more reports of big bass blitzes from Duxbury/Plymouth/Sagamore though...

man it's october 5th and people are predicting the end of the season. last year i took my last canal fish on october 29, and i know guys that got fish into november. obviously the majority of the fish had gone through in the middle of the month, but from what ive been reading on this site, there is are still a lot of fish north of the canal.

John, not sure how big the fish were but there were tons of them breaking through out the day in the huge swells of Plymouth beach today. Massive blitzes from Bert's to Long beach point. I got a few schoolies on heavy plugs a lot closer in than the melee but it was brutal w/ that wind in my face. W/ the early morning shifts to the east and the constant NE wind I would think you are right and all hell will break loose mid week next week while most are working. That's why I took these two weeks off this year ;) . There still are good amounts of fish in the ditch right now. Me and a few buddies have been putting in our time and I will be back out tommorow at 4am. The only problem is it seems to be about 100 schoolies to every one decent fish caught. That should change as there were still plenty of nice fish in CCB and the blow will hopefully push them closer.

Clambelly....it's becoming the same thing for the last 4-5yrs, except for the 3 day (mid week) blitz last year. Lots of nice fish in Plymouth & Barnstable....all coming closer to the canal. Then right in front of the canal, WELL out of casting range.

Then....NOTHING! No good catches IN the canal, and everyone wondering where the nice fish went?

I was thinking....right down the middle of the canal, single file, east tides, on sunny days!

bb1,

You might want to rethink that. :brow Over the past 5 years, I've experienced some of the best fall fishing of my life all in the canal.
No disrespect intended, but the guys who've been fishing nights over that period from late Sept on, had some exception catches, with some real HOGS mixed in. :brow
It's already been pretty good so far. ;) :brow

At the risk of attracting more nastygrams, the past 10 days have been decent for 40-46" fish at night. Not a cow per cast and you have to put some time in, but at least one per 3-4 hour outing. And in between there are at least some schoolies and low keeper fish to keep you from snoozing. How long it will continue is anyone's guess. The weather lately and a rough work schedule have been more of a problem for me than the lack of fish.

If that's not good enough for you, then I agree the fishing sucks. --123-3

Just got back from 3 days (nights) @ the canal....ONE fish about 26" between the 2 of us to show for it!

I did not see ONE bent rod (on a fish) the whole time I was there.

Nor did I see ONE other fish caught....dead or alive.

I used to get at least ONE 15-20lber for every fall weekend trip 3 years ago....and at least 3-5 nice fish each tide (sometimes 20 or more!).

I fished the east end and the middle this weekend....west and east tides.
