View Full Version : Furled Leaders in the Salt/Tropics?

Over the past couple of years I have read about furled leaders but have never tried one. Each new version of the Feather-Craft catalog sings the virtues of the furled leader, even in the salt. For those who are unfamiliar, links to a couple of enthusiastic articles are below (links removed by moderator - you can Google up the term).

The latent engineer in me appreciates the theory of the energy transfer through a furled leader but the lack of wider usage has me wondering about real-world performance. Specifically, I have a bit of difficulty seeing how the same construction that can benefit the dry fly fisherman can also aid the guy tossing a heavy Clouser.

So, has any one use furled leaders with big and/or heavily weighted flies?

Thanks.

Tom

I've been using them for about the last 18 years for dries, nymphs and streamers, and about the last 10 years for Glades snook, reds & tarpon. I prefer them to a standard mono by a large margin.

What lengths in the salt? Is there a length where the benefits fade away? How much tippet beyond leader? Loops on the leader end or those neat little rings used by Feather-Craft? (Ed - BTW, I have no affiliation with anyone.)
