This past week, I had the pleasure of having Riverview residents Stan Duncan and his 5 year-old son, Daniel, aboard for some inshore fishing.

Stan wanted to introduce his son to fishing in hopes the youngster would be 'hooked', enabling Stan to buy a boat that they both could enjoy. Stan's only wish for me that day was to "get Daniel on some fish".

With a livewell full of greenbacks and shrimp, we headed to one of my favorite docks in the Tierra Verde area that usually holds a plethora of gamefish. Before I could get Dad's rod baited, Daniel was struggling with a strong inshore Grouper. After he subdued the 10-inch fish, he was ready to do battle again. Daniel caught about 5 Grouper and a couple Mangrove Snappers from that dock; then was ready for some 'serious' fishing.

We headed over to the closest grassflat and saw a few schools of bait being crashed by something ferocious. Daniel wanted in on that action fast, so I baited him up and within 5 seconds had his first Spanish Mackerel screaming line off of the rod.

In all, Daniel boated 4 mackerel up to 20 inches in length, with many more 'missed' opportunities.
Needless to say, it looks like Stan will be buying that new boat after all!
