Fished the Winthrop area from shore last night fron 7-9:30. All fish were caught before the sun went down. Biggest was just under legal size and was caught on a large herring fly which I was bouncing off the mussel beds.

Hey Slamdance,
Thanks for the report. I have always wanted to fish the winthrop area but have only been out to explore it once. I live in Somerville so it's in a pretty good place for me to try after work. Do you have better luck fishing the east (ocean side) or in towards the airport? I remember there being a bit of a mussel bed off Winthrop beach. Any advice for my first time out there? For what it's worth, I fished Wollaston beach last night, saw a few fish smacking something but would not touch a fly.

Can't really help you as I was a passenger and getting towed around out there, so I don't know where we were. I suspect anywhere in the Harbor would produce the same or better results.

I've fished both sides- and feel like I've done a little better on the ocean side- but not by a whole lot. I tend to fish the inside on lower tides, and oceanside on higher ones, but will change depending on wind direction (avoiding that fly in the back of the head feeling). There's a big gravel spit that heads out from under the water tower- the very tip gets interesting at dead low. Bring ear plugs- you'll need them!

I live in Winthrop and I let the wind decide where I will fish. I have been having luck lately on a large white deceiver. I have hit 3 in the 22-24" range, the rest small. I saw several flyfishers fishing mussel flats off a street called Grandview Avenue....that is a good place to start...lots of parking and lots of area to spread out. good luck....
