Does anyone have any info about the Albies around Cape Lookout? I'm headed down around the first of November and was wondering if it is a little early this year.

The albies are here now, and should be in full swing by the time you come down.

Thanks John, I'm really looking forward to the trip this year.
Are they still offshore or have they moved in close yet?

They haven't been too far out but I haven't heard of them being right up on beaches or in the inlets yet. Maybe someone will come along with a more solid answer.

Pleanty of Albys on the East side of the shoals for those willing to cross 8-18#. Just stay out of the white water on the ride over..

I was riding around Morehead City around 3:30 today and saw a world famous fly fishing guide driving his truck into the parking lot of a grocery store. This past weekend was a washout and I am thinking that today was too. Veteran's Day is the time to be here.

If you by-pass flyfishing (because of obvious reasons), how good are the piers down there to sling metals at these albies? I have been there once and caught one from shore at the Ft Macon jetty area and saw a few while out on one of the piers and didn't know if the pier thing was a regular occurrence or just an occasional thing.

The albacore at the piers is just a random uncommon thing. Sometimes you just get lucky and are there at the right time and you catch them. Most of the time they are not. One of the last piers (Sportsmans) in the Atlantic Beach area just closed down for good this weekend. There is only one left in atlantic beach, called the Oceananna.

A couple years ago there was a run on the Bogue Inlet Pier in Emerald Isle that was unlike anything I have ever seen. That is the best pier around here and offers the best chance at getting albies from a pier. Fishes great on a NW wind for speckled trout too. A stiff NW is almost unfishable at Cape Lookout but pretty calm in EI.

I fished it sun/mon, we had bait all around us yesterday inside. waves were to much. they kicked our butt big time, but there is a few pods in close on the east side, once this wind lets up, it should be oil slick city out there near the jetty.
the sand spit for all you beach guys has change, huge cut down the middle.
alot less wading area at high tide.
Coming down with a couple of friends for the CLAF this weekend. Weather looks ominous from afar. Any local take on what we can expect for condiditions? Thanks.

hopefully the wind gods will be on your side, you never know, it could lay down for awhile. theres a ton of bait out there, just outside the hook toward the jetty. bring the sting silvers, pinks will do it, casting a fly will be real tough. the albies are around now, just look for diving terns.
good luck and stay safe.

I'm planning on taking a ferry to the spit Thursday if the weather report doesn't change. Have you seen any alberts close enough to the beach to cast to yet?

they werent big, but they were albies. the bait was not stacked there yet,

Thank you, that gives me some hope. I went to the beach this afternoon and there was more bait than water, so hopefully they're stacking in at the cape too.

Any idea if they will still run the tourney in those conditions?

The weather has been lousy for that tourney the past 3 or 4 years. My buddy`s Pop won the flyfishing division last year with ONE fish. Almost fell out of the boat when they brought it in.
and its raining sideways. Nice tournamenet though so far...good dinner at the aquarium. We'll give it a shot tomorrow and see what happens. Good luck.

Let us know how you make out. We're trailering a boat down on Wednesday and we're praying for decent weather. It's always an issue for us down there. Good luck!!

Conditions at CLKN7 as of
9:00 am EDT 10/28/2006:
Wind Direction (WDIR): SW ( 230 deg true )
Wind Speed (WSPD): 18 kts
Wind Gust (GST): 24 kts
This equals 8 foot waves....
around 11:00 after it "settled down". Tried to fish inside at the "Bite"--brutal conditions outside..didnt see any albies but did mark a few. I think we were one of 5 or so boats we saw made it out.
Wound up pick up various reds, popanos and the imfamous lizard fish on the way back in. Over all a great day on the water with capt dean especially considering it could have been completely shot.
Dont know if anyone even got a fish, there was some radio chatter but we couldnt confirm anything. Heading to the awards dinner now.
Heading out tomorrow hoping for better luck.
