Salmon fishing should be over in the NY tribs by now. Salmon River has big steelhead but as of today the water was high. If you head out that way, get ready for the potential for some crowded fishing. When it's good there are lot's of people around. It does thin out quite a bit once the salmon run is done though. Check out Whitakers.com for updates and guide info. Just a note, steelheading is tough fishing so be ready with top notch gear and especially clothing. If you've never done it, a guide would certainly be a good idea. It's mostly chuck and duck bottom bouncing. Hooking and landing a big steelhead is something you will never forget.

If you are willing to travel, the San Juan in New Mexico is great this time of year and it's a lot less crowded. You can expect fish from 16" - 20"+ on size 22-26 midge and BWO patterns. It's a great time. Hire a guide one day and learn the tactics. From then on you're fine to fish on your own. Make sure your boots have spikes. Like pond fishing? After a couple of days on the San Juan head up to the Indian Reservations. Your guide will give you all the info you need. Easy fishing for big fish.
