If you've driven from the northeast to Morehead City/Harkers area, I'd appreciate if you'd share the best route. Looks like just I-95 to I-70. I'm doing it for the first time next week, and would like to avoid hang-ups around DC or elsewhere if I can. Thanks in advance.

70 is not I-70, it's US 70 and it's not all 4 lane. I've driven twice, both times from VT, so I went NY throughway to Jersey T-pike, etc. Did I read something about the Woodrow Wilson Bridge lately? That's the most direct route through DC, but w/o the bridge, it's a swim across the Potomac.
Avoid peak traffic times north and south of DC if you can- I use the Harbor Tunnel in B-more seems to be quicker. Either way the drive s%^&*. Except, you can stop at JR in Wilson NC and get some good cigars.

We're heading down Saturday a.m. from RI. We're going to try another route suggested by a guy on THT. We are going to take Rte. 13 off 295 toward Norfolk after you go over the Delaware river just past the NJ Turnpike. Supposedly flatter ground if you are trailering and more boat/trailer shops along the way in case something goes wrong. Looks to be about the same distance and if you are trailering you're probably not breaking the sound barrier on 95 to gain the advantage of the big highway.

I took that Route once to Hatteras, assuming that's off at New Castle Delaware along the eastern shore of Maryland and then over/under the Chesapeake ( cool bridge). It's much slower in my experience. A lot of Route 13 is stop and go. I used to make from Middlebury, VT to Harker's Island in 18 hours, took Thruway to Garden State to Jersey Tpike to 95 until Wilson, NC, take a left and stop at the water. I was never towing though. I'm getting to my brother's house on Monday AM. "Playroom" Channel 69. See you all there.

Watch your tranny temp if you go 13...All stop and go. I used to go that way. This year I went 95 to 64 (going to the outerbanks). It was much better.
I drive overnite and all of 13 is closed until 6AM. 95 and 64 are open 27/7.

I have made numerous trips to MHC over the past 4 years, once with a trailer. I95 is good if you avoid the rush hours thru NYC and DC. The new bridge on 495 in DC is open which helps. An alternate route is I95 to WilingtonDL, US13 thru Dover down the eastern shore to the Chespeake bay bridge to Norfolk then 17 to New Bern, 70 to MHC. Good roads but some 2 lane and lights. Every time I've used this it has taken me 14 hours from Plymouth Ma. I95 to US70 has taken 13 to 20 hours depending on traffic. 2 weeks ago we went down leaving MA at 4pm and made it in 13hours 20min. Easy drive at night. Don't use US70 off I95 at Exit 97. There is a washout on 70 on the west side of Goldsboro from the tropical storm. At times big delays (probably ok at night). Try I95 exit 119 to US264 in Wilson to 117 south to Goldsboro then 70 east to MHC. 70, east of G/B is 4 lanes, some lights, good bypasses and fast to MHC. If you,re trailing I95 is great but chose your times reference rush hours etc. Good luck

I guess I should have clarified that the intent was to branch off 13 to 113 to avoid that stop and go at the lights. Have you tried that? Still time to change our route if we should.
Thanks,

Go 13 if you like Pig farms. 100 miles of pig farms. Did I mention the farms :)
I went 13 for 12 years and 3 transmissions latter I decided to try 64. The main reason is the overnite driving I do. 13 shuts down, 64 doesn't. At 3:00 am plenty of gas/coffee/rest rooms. With no stop and go it is an easier drive.
I will never see the CBT Bridge again...
