I asked and was told that you can't unless you hire a guide. But on the other hand, I've seen plenty of guys fish from shore with no problem (so I was told)

It's been my experience that they are pretty strict, especially on Bay Lake, the main lake. You may be able to get away with it, though I am by no means promoting it, on one of the other lakes. I was taken on one of the guided trips a few months back - didn't catch many smaller than five pounds - it was a lot of fun and the guide was very nice -

It is activly discouraged. I got chased off by some junior yoyo in a boat when I unlimbered my fly rod. You can't do it unless you use one of their guides - which is mucho dinero. Depending on the day, you get put on a boat with other people of various abilities and they charge more for bait.

If you are looking for "a day away from the park" I would suggest checking out the flats fishing in the Cocoa/Melbourne area. You can catch Redfish, Snook, Trout, and TARPON in the Indian & Banana rivers.

It is only about 30 minutes to the coast from Disney.

It all depends where you stay For instance if you stay at old key west resort or saratoga springs You can fish in the canals and ponds there. I've taken many bass up to 8 lbs there over the years mostly on red shad worms kelley worms and pumpkinseed senkos. there is also HUUUge catfish in the ponds at night HOTDOGS are the best bait however whos really going to fish at night in Disney World Too much stuff going on, Spend some time with the kids and inlaws Theres plenty of bars that are open late to keep you in the spirit of mousetown

I just got back from there, we stayed at Old Key West. Turns out you can fish along any of the canals and ponds in that area from shore (only place in Disney you can do it) without a guide. One of the ferry drivers told me that a 14lb'er was taken from the canal that leads to Downtown Disney from Old Key West. It looked very fishy along there....Next time the travel rod will join me.

If you take the ferry to/from Downtown Disney from Old Key West you can scope it out...plenty of spots from shore looked great.
