S.R. Latest, Thursday, 2/15 - 4pm, Parking, Etc..
I wanted to give you all an up to the hour report (and Pic's) on the snow and the angler parking here on the Salmon River in case your driving up here anytime soon. (This could and hopefully will all change by tomorrow?) More lake effect and wind forecast for around here with a possible break in the weather coming up next week. The upper river is totally fishable, with fish and there is parking. I took a drive around both sides of the river from Pineville to Altmar. The roads are in great condition, but the angler parking lots are a different story. The only lot that was totally plowed after yesterdays storm was Trestle South. Pineville and the lower fly zone parking area had been plowed recently, but still had a solid foot of fresh heavy snow from yesterdays storm. Even with 4 wheel drive it was not easy getting around in it. The Altmar North had been plowed but looked to me like it would be very easy to get stuck, even with 4 wheel drive. Ellis Cove angler parking area was not plowed at all.
Presently, the air temp forecast (providing we dont have any high winds) look pretty good for Tuesday and Wed.
Sat. looks ok at this point, once it warms up from a low of around 11 degrees ( -3 to 3 with the wind chill :) up to around 26 deg.

Here is what Whitakers Sports Shop has on their web site:
According to the National Weather Service here is some of the most recent snow totals for our area; Redfield 141 inches, Parish 121 inches, Pulaski 113 inches, Mexico 106 inches and Oswego 87 inches. Despite the excessive snow, the highway crews have done a great job on the roadways and the community has done an excellent job at working together.

With Winter finally making its presence felt and this normally being my down time, I figured I would spend a lot of extra time and do a lot of digging into the archives and post some of the better previously used Winter Fishing Articles, Winter questions from you the reader with my answer's or opinion's on Winter - Spring things. Lot's of great Winter photo's, humor, etc.. too, especially for the Intermediate to New Winter Salmon River Angler .

Fish are scattered top to bottom.
Ever heard of taking your snow mobile, snow shoes, shovel and cross country skies with you when you go fishing? You just might need them if your planning to fish this week after our "heavy dusting" of lake effect snow. :)
-
Unfortunately, there is not enough space to post all of the winter pictures, winter archived articles, winter tips, answer's to angler winter questions, winter safety related issues, etc.... here. Hopefully these will help some of you catch a few more fish or at least stay warm, safe and dry.
I sincerely hope you enjoy it all,

I didn't want to leave any of you hanging concerning the angler parking lots. Especially if you are planning on coming up this weekend. I took a drive, around noon today and found all of the lot's from 2a up to Altmar in pretty good shape. The sun was shinning.
Angler parking area's - 2a, pineville, Altmar South - (Ramp and fly zone) had about 6-8 inch's.
Sportsman, trestle and Melinda's fly shop (parking across the street in Altmar) were all plowed down to the pavement.
Altmar North had approx. 1 foot in it and looked like it might be easy to get stuck.
Ellis cove was not plowed at all.
Lake effect falling around Syracuse to about 20 miles North up 81. They have had some driving warnings out. This band of lake effect just arrived in the Pulaski area as I type this now at 1:43pm.
With lake effect and wind, please be very careful if your driving up here. Throw in some wind (which we have) and you will easily have white out conditions.
At 2pm, the sun is shinning, at 2:10 we have white out conditions. :) (To funny! but not that unusual at all.)
-
Fish are top to bottom and have seen little to no angler pressure (prime) over the last week or so. "All" of the winter holding spot's are with Steelhead, guaranteed.
Please do not put these fish in front of your own personal safety while driving here or while fishing.
** Also, please keep in mind that with all of this shelf ice and anchor ice. The water will be a tad deeper and moving a tad faster than normal while wading. **

This Afternoon: Periods of snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 22. Breezy, with a west wind between 22 and 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.

Tonight: Periods of snow showers, mainly before 10pm. Low around 14. Wind chill values between zero and 5. Breezy, with a west wind 21 to 24 mph decreasing to between 13 and 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
-
-
Also, we could possibly (?) get another 4 to 12 inch's, so this would effect the above snow levels in the parking area's.
-
Tues., Wed. and Thursday are looking real nice presently concerning air temp's.
