Brrr... Good thing I dressed for it, as Saturday was cold, windy and sometimes rainy. Water temps had dropped a bit, and I didn't expect much, but I wanted to take a shot so I went out.
Started at Nichols Point, Shelter Island. The east winds were pushing me into rocks too quickly, so after some time with no hits I looked for more protected shores. Headed south to the beach leading up to Sag Harbor.
Got an energetic 4 pounder and a teeny bass among rocks at a point, then continued to drift towards a beach I had seen bass among swimmers at last spring. Hooked and landed my first 28 inch fish, although oddly it never woke up and fought less energetically than the previous 4 pounder.
Moved north across 3 mile harbor and fished rocks along the North Haven shore. Drifting towards a 4 rock structure, I put cast in between them and got my first nice bass of the season. It was about 34 inches and took off like a freight train, going into backing immediately. Nice fight, and I've been remembering that fish since then. Got one more small bass among the rocks before I decided to split due to cold and rain.
Got all 5 on charteuese clousers.
I'm looking forward to some sunny days, as it sure would have been nice to see that 34 inch fish hit - however, still nice to grab a nice one blind casting.
