is it recommended to use the flat wax thread for fly tying?
I have been building custom fishing rods for a few years now and have a pretty good collection of thread, could I use that for tying flies?

Flat wax works well, especially for saltwater patterns, but people use a variety of tying threads depending upon what effect they trying to achieve. The flat wax is relatively strong and lays down nicely making it easier to shape the head of the fly for certain patterns. It is great for a lot of patterns, but probably not a necessity.
Definitely try some of the thread that you already have and see how things come out. Assuming the thread is not too thick, the same stuff you have been using on your rod wraps should be fine for whipping up a few deceivers, clousers, etc. Some of the thread used for rod building has great color and could make some really neat tarpon and offshore flies.

cool...thanks guys
I have plenty of A size thread
Flat waxed nylon is the ticket. Lays down nice and neat and has a good appearance after the hard as nails or epoxy is applied.
