I camped/fished/canoed Rangeley, ME about 10 years ago. Stayed at the campground right on the lake at the state park. Very nice campground. Fished the Kennebago, Dead River, Rangeley Lake and some of the smaller ponds in that area. There's a fly shop up there and they were very helpful, can't remember the name.

Moosehead region is nice there are a couple of campgrounds on the western side of the lake and several primitive campsites. The east and west out let fish very well that time of year and there are endless opportunities to fish ponds all over the area. Also it is a good day trip to drive up to Seboomick Dam and fish the begining of the West branch of the Penobscott. Greenville is close by if you need groceries etc.
Good Luck

Maineguideman is right on target. The west shore is the place to be
the first week of June. The Rockwood area has it all. The river below
the Brassua dam is very productive. L/Locks, Brookies, and even Lakers
are caught real easy this time of year.
The East and West Outlets are a blast. Early morn lake trolling around
the mouth of the Moose River is a treat.[the island you troll around has
an active eagles nest]
Rockwood has it all, food, gas, boat rental[if needed]
Demo Pond or Misery Pond are nearby, and many more unspoiled areas
to catch native brookies.
I have been going for 30 yrs and lived in the area for 8yrs.

The Andro is a good bet too, I didnt even think of it and its probably a shorter drive. There is a couple of good camp grounds in maine as well and the last five miles of river in NH and the first five miles in Maine is a great drift. Bethel Outdoors will do a shuttle fro 15$ with your car and 20$ with their truck. You can use a canoe on parts of the Andro but a pontoon boat or drift boat is more better.

I aggree witht the recommendations for the Western Shore of Moosehead. My buddies and I have been fishing there every June for the past 5 years. We don't camp, stay at Maynard's in Rockwood, great deal, clean cabins good chow, very reasonable. No matter there are a plenty of primitive camping sites on the East Outlet that are awesome, right on great pools. It is first come first serve, and you'll need a permit if you want to make a camp fire. You said you want to river fish, but I would bring some type of water craft. Canoe, float tube, pontoon something. You never know what the water flows are going to be like. Last year we could not fish any river other than the west outlet because of the heavy flows. So we hit the small ponds, salvaged the trip, there are some real nice brookies in some of those small pond. Make sure you check the reg's some are flyfishing only, catch and release etc...

I like the adroscoggin in june nice hatches and their are a lot of small native streams in the errol area native brookies and smaller streams provide easier fishing on a spin/fly rod I really enjoy that area.

Every year a group of us used to go camping and fishing the White River in Rochester VT. We stayed at Mountian Trails Campground http://www.mountaintrailscamping.com/index.html great place. Lenny, the owner is a super host. Between the campground and the RT 89 exit in Sharon, flows 30 miles of gorgeous, pristine river. The trout fishing is consistent and there are some great canoe/yak runs. Early June is a perfect time for fishing there. Also some great water falls for swimming. PM me for more info.
