Hey there,

I've Googled my ass off trying to find actual step-by-step instructions for tying Turneffe Crabs... has anyone here actually tied one?

I can find the recipe online, but not the instructions. I don't need the recipe... Basically, I just need to know how the Furry Foam is attached...

I need these for an upcoming trip and I have to get them tied up soon.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Chuck,

Try wrapping the shank with thread and coating it with superglue. Thats worked for me with similar patterns. Hot glue would probably work too.

1. Tie on eyes on top of hook

2. Cut furry foam to hook gap width

3. invert hook in vice

4. Tie in furry foam right behind eyes wrappin toward hook bend until you reach the barb area.

5. Wrap back toward eyes

6. tie on rubber legs directly over eys using them as a base.

7. wrap towards eye of hook

8. Fold furry foam over to make the shell back tie down and trim leaving a tag for a head.

9. Add wing material - deer hair - at the furry foam tie down area

10 whip finish, head cement - repeat.

hope this helps

MNTrout,

So basically it's the same process as tying a Gurgler?

Exactly the same as the gurgler except add the eyes on the top of the hook and the legs and furry foam on the bottom. Inverted gurgler

Then add a deer hair wing/weedguard if desired.

good luck, hope you catch some nice fish

Where you going?

MNTrout,

Thanks for the info... there are no step-by-step instructions for this fly anywhere on the web, so your info is greatly appreciated.

As for my trip, I'm headed to Costa de Cocos in Xcalak, Mexico in early May...

Thanks again for the info!

I was told a while back, by a very knowledgeable individual, that superglue should not be used in the tying of Bonefish flies. He stated that Bonefish have an extremely good sense of smell and superglued flies would actually cause them to move off the flat.
