I am in the market to buy a used truck. I am looking for something with pretty low miles and an extended or crew cab. I originally was looking at the new Tundra, I could probably swing it but I am young and just bought my first house and don't think its the right decision. I have read CR and Edmunds but I don't know how much stock I put in each of their opinions. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I just bought a used Toyota 4runner. I am very impressed with the Toyota products. We have a new Matrix (I refer to it as the gocart) also. Look for some certified ones on thier website.

What will you be pulling? There are some pretty good deals to be had on late model Titans. Pretty good reviews from both Edmunds and on these forums from what I can tell.

Won't be pulling anything at the moment. At first it will be primarily for convience with projects around the house. WHEN I do get a boat, it won't ever be something larger than 23'.

i know it's not really considered "low miles" but we used to have a GMC pickup (circa 1995) diesel and it hit something like 300K before we noticed it starting to age.

Your situation sounds similiar to mine, new house, young, needs pick up to help with house projects. I just recently bought a 05 tundra 15,000 miles so far so good, lots of power and good on gas for a v8.

I have an "01 Tundra with @ 80k on it and love it. I tow @ 4500lbs no problems. Has a goood ride, and is OK on gas. i have the extended the cab. Only gripe I can make is that this is a relatively big vehicle and hard to park in tight spaces.

I just bought a used Pathfinder.

My advice: if you're going to a dealer, don't just look up the Kelley Blue Book price, also look up the Edmunds.com and NADA Blue Book prices. These different services assigned widely different values to the car I was looking at. In my case, I went in with Kelley Blue Book, then the sales rep went to the managers office (as they always do) and came back with a print out from Edmunds showing why I should be paying a couple grand more. Better to have ALL info ahead of time.

I have a 2000 4Runner. Very good for what it is. I have pulled an 18' Parker, a 23' Parker W/A (only a few miles around town and to the ramp. Too heavy to pull at anything close to highway speed  ) and currently my 21' Sea Hunt Triton. Yeah, I know, too many boats in too short a time........It's a disease! --125-3 I bought the 21' SeaHunt with the thought that this is the most boat I feel that I can safely tow on the highway occasionally. 4 runner is rated for 5,000 lbs. I figure the boat, motor, trailer, gas and gear weighs in around 4300 lbs. Close enough to the limit for my liking. Also good as an all-around tailgating vehicle, dump runner, Home Depot machine and the dogs like it. Decent gas mileage, around 20mpg on the highway. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.

If you really want to tow a 23' boat, keep looking into a used Tundra, Tahoe, Expedition, Sequoia, or a Ford F150 pick-up.

Tundra, Tundra, Tundra. I love mine good on gas for the size, tow's my 6500 lb boat(Cape to N.C. and Back) Great service from the dealer, Comfortable ride. I'm hard on trucks never had a ford, or chevy last more than 100,000 miles with out major work. My Tacoma did and I'm sure my Tundra will also. I have the 06 four door with tow package SR5. :-%

What you might consider is what kind of loads you need to carry outside of some future boat purchase. I have a property in NH where I've been restoring a log building so I need a big truck with moderate load capacity for construction materials, etc. The Dodge Ram 1500 with a hemi gives me 18 mpg on the highway and 13 in the city. Newer ones with mds (multiple displacement) do better. My wife has a magnum with the same motor and mds and gets 25. No problem towing any boat that I have tried.

I have had Tundra since new in '01. I don't tow a lot but I do tow a '74 23' SeaCraft ( a tank) twice a year no problem, no issues. Very comfortable and quiet, still no rattles>
