Yes, they will do the job, but Mustad hooks S*** in my opinion. I never use them...NEVER EVER! Most do, why, because they are priced very low...

Hey RI Jason,
I second the not being a fan of mustad hooks, aithough the new signature series is by far their best hook (IMO), but the real thought here is do you need 1,000 hooks of the same kind to start out, why not try a number of different hook styles and find out what you like, tiemco, Gamakatsu, etc.
Either way welcome back

Jason

Those two models (3366 and 9674) are not really suitable for Salt Water. They are bronzed fresh water hooks. Even if you rinsed the heck out of them after each use I would not not trust them. Good Salt Water hooks are pretty easy to come by and once you get over the sticker shock it is not that bad.

tight wraps...

It will take you 20+ years to use up those hooks. If I tie 40 flies in a year I'm doing good. I'd suggest you figure out the 2-5 patterns you want to start with, then buy the hooks. In general, the sizes you listed are good. I just bought a bunch of hooks in a couple of saltwater sizes. If you want me to send you a handful to get you started PM your address and I'll mail them out. I've got some mustards and eagles so you can compare. Lots of people like the Gamakatsu which are very sharp. I like sharpening my own hooks so I don't use them as much.

If you catch a 50 lb bass on my hook I don't want to hear about it.

Those guy's are spot on. I always try to find what I need in a better grade hook, then go shop in the Mustad selection. In the longer shank hooks, Mustad always has what I need... too often, unfortunatly. Notime/Peter Mac  sorry about the Mustads on mine.

I agree on the Eagle Claw 254SS

I'm a big fan of the Tiemco 800S too.

are the mustad hooks reasonable for fresh water? Ive been tying for the past couple of months but havent fished any of the flies yet should i be looking into a new hook?

I use Mustad's as well and used them on some of the flatwings for the swap. I was recently told they are a bit heavy, hence the new purchase of the eagle hooks. I had a tough time buying them though. I think eagle claw and picture the little worm hooks that come 8 to a plastic package.

I've lost more big fish to Eagle Claw hooks than any other, now I only tie my "give away" flies on them. Mustad Signature are what I use for 90% of my flies now- C70SD and C47SD.

You are fine with the Mustads. Given all the chemically sharpened, micro barb premium designer hooks on the market there are a lot more choices than twenty years ago. Tight lines!
