I was wondering what rivers (not spots) are interesting during this period. I might head down to RI on the west wall for schoolies if they are in on the second weekend around the 20th, but during the week while my fiance' is gone I am hoping to hit EVERY SPOT I CAN.

Fishing during that week in april would be awsome. Most of my experience is from the north maine woods, considerably easier fishing from what I have experienced around here. So the general question is, what would you hit during this time? I am located in Salem Ma and just want to get out and wet the 6wt for the first fish of the year. I can't prepare another piece of gear, everything is ready and I am out of $ so I can't buy anything else. Help me get out there and fish!

I've only fished salt in RI, but I keep hearing great things about the Wood River watershed for trout. Be advised however that RI does not allow year-round trout fishing, unlike Mass. Opening day I believe is around tax filing time. Check the regs on the RI DEM site.

P.S. There will be PLENTY of schoolies around when you are there, too ;) , and not just at WW. PM for details if you wish.

Ian,

You've got a slew of streams in central New Hampshire within an easy drive of Salem, off I-93. Check out the Winnepesaukee from Tilton to the Pemigewasset in Franklen. Then, try the Pemi's no kill area in Franklin, just above the Route 11 bridge up to the Eastman Falls Dam. That area also is heavilly stocked with (brood stock) Atlantic Salmon.

The Pemigewasset below Franklin to Boscawen has some very good stretches for both trout and Salmon And don't forget to try the Sewalls Falls area above Concord.

The Pemigewasset just below the high dam in Bristol can be awsome for big trout. If you get up that far, check out the outlet to Newfound Lake(Newfound River). It can produce some really nice Landlocks and Rainbow trout early on.

Closer to home, the Lamprey River above the town of Newmarket can produce some good fishing and is heavilly stocked.

You do need a NH License and also a salmon stamp if you fish for them.

I think 60+ dollars for a license is a bit out of my league, (since I just bought a ma license) but then again if the fishing is worth it, I would go anywhere! This post is trying to identify MA sites for midweek fishing, but I do have two weekend slots, so maybe I will go for a one day license and try it that way??

Thanks for the reply's so far,
IB

I woould hit the south side of the cape, falmouth down to mashpee flats. Plenty of ponds that should be giving up all species of trout and you can always hit the beaches in search of schoolies. PM me and I will give you a couple of ideas. I should also be down there during that time and I may be able to show you a couple of out of the way places that do not get that much pressure.

For a non-resident NH fishing license $53.00. I buy one for MA, NH & ME every year. Cheap? Hell No --124-3 Cheaper than booze & drugs? --127-3- You bet!

Ian if your after trout in MA here's the list of stocked waters. If you don't mind stockies that week should be prime. They also update what waters are stocked every week. Good luck.

I do have one special project planned though, anyone got a pontoon boat they wouldn't mind letting me borrow one day on the weekends I have posted? I could of course provide a small fee if required. Also, anyone who would like to come and check out cranes pond in the WMA section of the parker river, let me know as I will either float into it, or strap up the back pack and hike in.
