REMINDER:
IMPORTANT PUBLIC HEARING ON THE FUTURE OF STRIPED BASS MANAGEMENT. CCA MA ENCOURAGES YOUR ATTENDANCE.
MEETING TIME AND PLACE:
Tuesday, May 23 at 7:00 PM
Needham High School Auditorium
Needham, MA
Directions: Rt 128 to Exit 19B. At 2nd traffic light take a left onto Webster St and look for Kingsbury St on your right. Take Kingsbury St and look for the high school on the right.
This meeting is scheduled by the MA Division of Marine Fisheries (MADMF)and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC). Its purpose is to offer an opportunity for the public in MA to comment directly on the Public Information Document (PID)for Amendment 6 to the Interstate Fisheries Management Plan for Striped Bass.
In short, managers have determined that overfishing has occurred on striped bass since 1997, and the current amendment (5) is inadequate and not maintaining a healthy striped bass stock. Alterations to existing regulations are needed and required. The goal of the ASMFC is to have amendment 6 in place for the 2001 fishing season.
CCA MA has been working all along with the ASMFC and officials with the MADMF to express our concerns about striped bass management. While we have many specific comments on the PID, our overall position is that fishing mortality must be reduced accross the board: all user groups and all juristictions. Despite official claims that striped bass are restored, CCA MA is disturbed with the condition of striped bass stocks, and particularly concerned with lack of large fish (breeding stock biomass) in the population.
Attendance at this meeting will help drive home the importance of striped bass in Massachusetts.
For more information, visit the ASMFC website at www.asmfc.org and review the PID for amendment 6 and the 1999 striped bass stock status report.
