View Full Version : Abel Super 10 question

A local fly shop owner has offered me a very attractive deal on an Abel 10. The reel would be used for permit/Tarpon. The fact that it is interchangable with an Abel Big Game spool for 12/13 wt. is attractive, too, in case I want to chase really big tarpon. Here is my question: The dealer says I could put 8-wt line on the 10 with no problem and use it as the backup to my regular 8 wt reel on a trip to Belize later this year. (I'd put a 10 wt on the 10 and switch to an 8 only in an emergency.) Is he correct that there is "no" problem putting 8-wt line on the 10? I realize the spool will look a bit emptier, but so what? There still would be sufficient backing on the reel. The 10 isn't that much heavier than an 8, so weight isn't a deal-breaker, either. Am I missing something important? I understand why there often is a problem putting heavier line on a reel in terms of having to take off some backing. But I admit I never really understood why you couldn't "underline" a reel as long as the reel balances on the rod you'd use it with. The other possibility is a Super 8/3 kit, though the 10 is a bit better deal even factoring in the cost of the extra spool. The dealer is entirely reputable, and I'd like to support my local shop rather than cast around on the internet. Sorry for the windy post, and thank you in advance for your advice.

I have the Big Game 4 (same spool size as the Super 10) and it's a great permit ans small tarpon reel. An 8wt line should work fine in a pinch but i think you'll find the reel just a tad heavy for the 8 wt rod. Fine as a backup though and a real workhorse reel in general.

Ive used the Super 10 for 5 years on 8,9,10 wt rods and lines. No problem with having a little extra room on the spool with an 8 weight line. You shouldnt necessarily need a second spool for tarpon. If your concerned that 175 yds of 30# backing isn't enough you can put smaller diameter braid on as a backing (or start the boat engine).
I am very weight conscious with my reels balancing out the rod especially on the flats for 6 days at a time but at 8.7 oz, I find it fine. Its much lighter than an equivalent Tibor Riptide at 9.5oz if you are looking for a quality reel that can hold up to 10 weight lines.

...for your helpful posts. Looks like I'll get the reel.
