View Full Version : Fly line to backing knots???
Doing some last minute rod rigging and wanted to get an idea of what type of knots you're using to tie your backing to fly line. I typically use an albright. Are there any other knots that any of you would suggest? I never had an issue with that knot connection but I was wondering if there was somethnig that might be better suited for bigger fish, or even small tunoids.

look up the x knot it looks pretty easy and self cinching someone just posted it on here today.
Nice knot... I need to learn how to tie a bimini twist first :) .
Now i'm wondering how many of you tie a bimini on the backing before going to the fly line?

Have used everything from a nail knot to double bimini (gel-spun) and have never had any of them fail..........for 99% of the inshore we do in northeast a nail knot will do the trick for big stripers, albies, skippies, bones, big blues never had an issue. I like the double bimini for the gel spun backing for my BFT set ups,......I like to keep thinhgs simple, no need to over complicate
(IMO)

I set up all of my saltwater reels with loops on the fly line and a bimini twist on the backing. I use gel-spun backing and have gotten into the habit of doubling the end of it and tying a thirty turn bimini twist with the loop being large enough to go around the reel for changing lines. I don't know if doubling the backing is really neccessary, but it's a habit I've gotten into and I've never had a failure.

The Slim Beauty is a great knot when gel spun or braid is used for the backing. It's cone-shaped and goes through the guides well.
Also, if you're using a monocore fly line (like Wulff) do NOT use a nail knot - it'll strip the coating off when pressure is applied. An Albright is a better option, or whip a loop.
