Heading down to OBX in a week or so. Thanks to everyone for the info from an earlier post. I would like to do a half-day inshore charter and have options out of either Hatteras Harbor or Oregon Inlet.

Any difference in the two areas? Any preferences? Boats and prices are all about equal. Although I found a few that look good, I would be happy to hear of any specific charter recommendations from members' past experiences.

Thanks.

I just got back Sunday from a week down there, awesome as always. As far as guides go I have used the same one both times I have taken charters while I was down there. I used TideRunner out of Hatteras Harbor Marina.

The guide, Darrell, is a local guide as well and his southern dry humor is def a plus. All the captians down there have the prices locked up, they only vary $5-$10 per guide. So its hard to find a cheaper boat or guide. The boat he runs is only 3 years old and it is beautiful! I have had a great time on both trips with TideRunner. We have caught a ton of bluefish, flounder and trout too. If you have any other questions feel free to ask or PM me.

Tunakillah,

Thanks. Tiderunner had been one of my options and I booked him this morning. We are really looking forward to it.

We are also interested in splitting an offshore charter. I understand the either marina can arrange it, but I still have my initial question unanswered - is there any diffeence in the fishing out of either marina? Is either a shorter run to the good fishing areas from one or the other?

Any help on offshore suggestions would be appreciated.

From my limited experience (fisher out of both Hatteras & Oregon Inlet) offshore earlier in the year (i.e. Spring) can be better out of Hatteras b/c they fish further south hence warmer water and potential for better fishing. Late summer Oregon Inlet is the place b/c boats can run north easily to find the bite.

Just got back from OBX, with a few days in D.C. in between. Lost three days in OBX last week to rough weather (50 mph winds from offshore). Water was murky for a few days afterwards. Got out with Tiderunner for an inshore charter. Some small blues and trout. Nothing worth keping, but a good time anyway. Also landed a few small blues from the beach. Got one half day in at Cape Hatteras Point. I don't feel too bad because it seemed like everyone was getting skunked.

Not much for catching, but a good time was had. OBX certainly is a fishing hotbed. We cannot wait to get back.

Thanks to all for your helpful info.

Glad you had a good time. Too bad about the wind, it's a Spring hazard.
