Trying something new (for me). :)
Using a hollow fly technique as a spreader to drape material over. Borrowed some ideas from innovative patterns such as the "Hollow fly".

Also am trying to be transparent enough to allow Griz feather pattern to show thru.

How:
4/0 mustad C68S SS
tie in bucktail to stiffen tail
tie in flash (pearl)
tie in 2 long grizz feathers
tie in sparse white poly bear belly
Tie in clump of long bucktail .... tips facing eye
(can vary color ... I used white, pink, yellow)
work around shank and super glue.
using pen body , force bucktail over itself and towards tail. Bind down. This should form a cone shape.
Working from the eye side:
tie in a sparse veil of polybear over the bucktail at the belly
tie in a sparse cheek of yellow polybear on each side
tie in sparse upper body on each side (light green in this case)
tie in sparse dark green back
tie in green flash
tie in sparse dark blue back w/ dark blue angel hair & polybear.
form head w/ gunk and secure eyes.
When dry hold fly uner warm tap water to "set" shape.

Veil should be sparse and translucent. Should be able to see grizz feathers inside.
Still playing w/ this technique .... has a lot of potential.
Makes for a light "hollow" pattern.
I'll be working on using less material and getting a more uniform veil.

pics show a 9" fly(s) on a 4/0

If you ever need a test pilot, I'd be glad to swap you some of my flies...of course my ties look like something Burt Reynolds wore when he was filming Hooper. Seriously, that's beautiful work. I always check out your threads for inspiration.

very nice - I am big fly flinger.

How does the the spreader cone made with bucktail compare with those made with easy body per Rich Murphy Conomo Special.

I haven't tested it much yet. In the tub test the EZbody spreader seems more uniform. The bucktail spreader still needs some work... but it's nice to stay with the natural materials.
Hopefully the fish will tell me their favorite! :brow
