Just received a nice gift certificate to Orvis. My current 8 wt. showing signs of age.
Any experience with Orvis Clerwater Series? Could be free with generous gift.
Thanks
I'd recommend you stop into your local Orvis dealer and test cast one. They have two different tip flexes in their 8 wt. series and one of them might work well for you. I own the 5wt. with a tip flex of 7.5. At first (my first 5wt.) I loved it, now after casting and owning other rods, I can feel its limitations. Nice finish for a rod in that price range in my opinion. I'd also recommend you test cast a higher end rod too. Their t3's and zero g's are really nice rods. You can always put your certificate towards the purchase of a more expensive rod to make it less painful to shell out all that dough....

Thanks for the 1 reply. We have a T3 and I need a "knock-around" rod always on board for the unexpected.
I prefer the mid-flex.
But with the GC and Father's Day approaching, a cheapy Orvis rod ciosts me $0.00!!

Had a Coast Guard fishing friend help rig the flats boat & in return got him an Orvis Clearwater #8 outfit for getting into flyfishing because he was amazed at the topwater action on flies & usually threw walk the dog type lures on the flats for redfish, snook & trout. He caught some of the biggest fish of his life on that #8 weight outfit, --127-3- which he thought was so much more fun & easier since he now knew how to flycast ! --125-3

Can't beat a free rod! As a backup, it's a nice option.
Too bad Orvis doesn't sell Temple Fork rods ;) . Although I still like the Clearwater, the TFO might be a slightly better value as a backup.
