Hi,
New to the forum, great site. I am starting out with surf flyfishing, I bought a 9wt set up. I planned on 150 yards dacron backing (30lb), then the fly line, but reading "Inshore Fly Fishing" by Lou Tabory, he recommends mono between the backing and the fly line, 100-200 yards. I don't know if my 9wt okuma SLW reel will hold the extra mono. What are your thoughts?
TIA

There is no need to have anything besides the 150 yards of 30# dacron backing tied to the fly line. Keep your setup simple.

Going with 20lb dacron should allow you to get closer to 200 yards of backing. Something to consider.

No need for the mono. I agree, keep it simple.

You'll have plenty of backing to meet your needs for any inshore fishing you'll encounter in the north east.

Thanks all, rigged up last night, used a needle nail knot for the backing to fly line connection. Going to hit the Delaware River friday afternoon to start practicing with this thing.

I dont know what you are catching but Iwill assume its blues and stripers and albies...Ipersonally dont understand about the mono thing either...never heard of such a thing...what happens when the mono breaks? goodbye everything...I would go with the 30lb backing...here is what I do also...I change colors every 100yds as a visual marker to be aware at all times how much is out...you could even put the 1st 100yds or so of Gel Spun and easily get 200yds of 30lb backing

My suggestion for capacity is super braid..i use it on the flats but i do not fish northeast however...for capacity comparison go to the Abel page and check out their specs on backing with 30 dacron vs. 50 braid...

30 or 20# backing should be fine. It's pretty hard to get spooled fishing from shore in the North East. One suggestion would be to tie a big bimini or surgons loop in your backing and whip a loop in the end of your fly line. Make sure the backing loop is big enough to pass a spool of fly line through. Makes swapping lines much easier. Just a suggestion. Regardless have fun with your new rig. It's a beautiful past time.
