Last month I saw a few different variations of a conehead fly in either saltwater flyfishing or fly fishing in saltwater, needless to say I no longer have those magazines. I'm trying to remeber how to tie that fly. There were lot's of variations. Most looked like they would work quite well. It was similar to a conehead deceiver but slightly different. Does anyone have any knowledge of this fly or have any suggestions of how to tie a pattern similar to that. Any info would be great. Thanks a lot,

Rob

In Lefty Kreh's book "Saltwater Fly Patterns," I found the following instructions for something he calls a Conehead Deceiver: "A Lefty's Deceiver (any variation) is tied. Instead of using bucktail for the collar, combed sheep's wool is used. Then, a thin coating of silicone is applied and the eyes applied. Use a marking pen to make red gills and add a final thin coating of silicone." Since I don't have sheep's wool or silicone, I haven't tied this pattern. Probably not the one you saw in the mag, but thought I'd pass on the info.

As regards squid imitations, I've tied the "Chenille Squidlet" another pattern in Lefty's book. It's easy to tie, and I couldn't believe how good it looks (hell, if I can make a fly look good, then anyone can)-- It goes like this:

Hook: 2/0 long shank;

Thread: Pink

Tail: two 4" long thin pink rubber band pieces tied in at the rear. Two 4" long thin white saddle hackles and four 3 1/2" thin white saddle hackles tied in at the end of the shank. On each side tie in two 2" narrow white saddle hackles. Place multiple pink dots with a marker all over the white feathers.

Body: At the rear of the shank, make a 3/8" wide ring of pink chenille and tie it off. Immediately next to the pink chenille (closer to the hook eye), tie in a 1/2" wide ring of white chenille. The chinelle should fill roughly half of the hook shank. Tie in a narrow strip of pink rabbit fur and wind it to within 1/8" of the hook eye. Tie off the fur, clip and form a small head. Glue a pair of 1/4" dolls eyes on the pink chenille band at the rear of the shank. Coat the thread head with epoxy or head cement."

Lefty credits Andy Krajewski with this pattern. Probably more info than you wanted, but I couldn't resist. Good Tying!

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. I think I have that book buried away somewhere, I'll have to pull it out.
