I'm heading down to Atlantic Beach the first week in July. I've got two mornings booked with a guide to do some fly-fishing. I'd like to fill in the other mornings with some DIY fly-fishing. I've heard that the Fort Macon Jetty is OK. Can any one suggest any other close by locations where I can wade in or fish from shore? Thanks.

Unfortunately the tides are not going to be very good for fishing tailing reds the first week of July. Your walk and wade options with flyrod are extremely limited around here due to mucky bottom in the creeks and etc. If you feel like driving a little ways (45 min) you can go up to Cedar Island the fish the sandy flats to the east of the ferry boat terminal. Flounder, trout, reds.... but make sure the wind is from the south. There is also a good area for wading in Emerald Isle which is at the other end of Bogue Banks from Atlantic Beach. Drive to the end of Coast Guard Road and there is a beach access. There is an offshore sanndbar that keeps the waves down a little and there wrre big schools of menhaden in there yesterday with the typical customers shadowing them. Have fun on your trip to our great area. Who are you fishing with while you are here?

Capt Gordon,
I'm going out with Capt. Joe Shute. I went out three years ago with him and had a blast. Looking for a repeat. Thanks for your input. Tight lines

Capt. Gordon,
Is the bar closest to the square or circle in the link below?

Are the flats closer to the 1 or the 2 in the link below? Thanks.

Square is where the first one is. Second one is both. You will have fun with Joe. They have been catching AJ's and all sorts of other stuff lately. Look for my dinky little boat poling the shallows.

If you're staying in the atlantic beach area I'd also suggest trying the hoop hole creek marshes for a quick place to get to. Go to the atlantic station shopping center where food lion is. Park to the right of the dominoes near the woods line. There is a trail entrance at the woods between where the dominoes is and where the old hardees was. This trail is taken care of by the nc coastal federation. Follow the trail about 100yds through the woods and take a left on an old blacktop road and continue through the woods for a few more minutes. You'll come out at bogue sound with hoop hole creek on your left. Theres lots of flats with deeper creekbeds along the marsh grass and if you walk out into the sound a hundred yards or so you'll see oyster rock islands out of the water. Right past the island there is a deep channel running through that usually has some bluefish in it. The rest of the marsh and hoop hole creek hold drum, trout and flounder (the flounder will take clousers). It's a pretty safe place to fish, just wear some water shoes or old tennis shoes to protect your feet from oysters. Have fun.
