This Wednesday (6/20) at 4:30pm, at the NEFMC meeting in Portland, Maine, the Council will discuss the US At-Sea Processor (USAP) observer issue. The official agenda item says:
"Observer Coverage for At-sea Processor Vessels- Consider a request that NOAA Fisheries require at-sea processor vessels to carry observers."
As you all know, USAPs, like the American Freedom, are not required to carry (translation: do not carry) observers. Similar vessels on the west coast, and all around the country in general, are required to carry full observer coverage (and for good reason!).
If possible, try and show up to show your support for this important measure. It is vital that if vessels like these are going to fish off our coast that they carry observers. It will also be good to show the Council and NMFS that people are concerned about the way the herring fishery is regulated.
The meeting is at:
Eastland Park Hotel
157 High Street, Portland, ME 04101
Tel (207) 775-5411
If you have any questions please respond on this thread or PM me.
Hope to see some of you there...we need to show our support for these things if we ever want them to actually happen!
