First, of all do you guys have tow insurance and is it worth it?

Second, where do you get it from?

I'm asking, because I received an offer in the mail from BoatUS (I think I filled out a survey on their web site at one time). Anyway, the offer is for a 1 year subcription to their magazine & emergency tow insurance for up to $150 per incident for $28 per year. I have not looked at all of the fine print yet. But, have anyone done business with BoatUS, or someone else. Input appreciated.

I have BoatUS insurance on my skiff and so far haven't had a problem with them even tho I have never filed a claim. Another carrier is Seatow. Check out their website at www.4seatow.com...Best of luck...

I thought that there was a post on the old board by josko regarding the merits of tow-insurance. Might be worth searching the archive.
I believe that some mail arrived recently which said that seatow was going to offer some kind of discount and kickback to members of the "Recreational Fishing Alliance" which is a fishing political action group. If I locate the mailing I'll post a follow-up message.

Get Seatow. Best deal around, no doubt. I had three tows last year, one from waay offshore. (burned out coil, shorted starter, dragger net wrapped around prop.) They were prompt, curteous, helpful, and were eager to help and make us at ease. Second and third time they didn't even bother with paperwork - just cast us off at the marina dock and waved goodbye. Each time they left port within 5 mins of us contacting them.

Don't know where you boat, but Donny Lynch, Seatow Cuttyhunk, is one of the oldtime Cuttyhunk captains. professional to the bone.

I've heard several bad things in Falmouth harbor about TowUS, but this is all secondhand.

Very much worth it. I have BoatUS and they seem fine. I've had to only use them once last year off Menemsha. Curtious, and showed up in 30 minutes or so (From Falmouth).

Forget the low 150 dollar one though. Always get the unlimited (from either BoatUS or Sea-Tow) which only costs around 80 dollars a year.

I also have trailer insurance from them (like AAA) for only 10 bucks a year.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for all the input. The trailer insurance for an extra $10 per year sounds too good to pass up! Greg O.

Josko's response is right on. I have purchased the SeaTow insurance for four years-last year I used it. The 85 dollar boat show special was well worth the cost. My engine blew in Vineyard Sound near Robinson's Hole. Captain Don from cuttyhunk SeaTow was on site within 45 minutes- he towed us back to Westport Mass. Total time on his clock was just over 3 hours. His fe to non-members was about (I don't remember exactly $150 per hour) According to his "bill" for info purposes was $530 or so. The Boat Us coverage of $150 per incident pales in comparison. Don't waste your $ on BoatUS coverage if your typically venture any distance. Go SeaTow! PS I have no conflict of interest here!

I haven't directly, but my Boss has. From what I hear, in Bean town its the Sea-Tow guy who has the Bad rep. Guess it all matters who the franchise owner is wether or not he's good.
