Expecting another epic day on saturday I bought gloves and carried my heavy, best camera. Double JINX! With flat calm and clear, sunny weather the fishing returned to earth, about 10-15 per person. My best memory was one epic STOP, line ripped from my hands as a huge fish turned, then the fly popping free.

By Sunday we had most of the 12 fishermen on site. Most went back to the outer cape beach where it was good but not epic. Frank Cammack caught dinner in the form of a 36 ½” fish off the grass beds. Just as the fast incoming was making everyone retreat off the outer bar, Doug Livermore spotted a pod of big fish in a wave face. He charged OUT, made a cast and hooked one, paid the price on the next big wave, then lost the fish after a long run. He barely got off the bar without swimming. Logan and I waded the Sesuit harbor environs where I sight cast 2 nice fish but overall there were nowhere near the expected numbers. of fish in residence for the incoming.

Monday started the five days of guides rotation. Bill Fleming (Boston) and I fished with Mendy at Barnstable with good fishing in the form of deep dredging in the channel, hitting the flats on the incoming for 2 very nice fish for each of us, and ending up on alternating blues/striper under-bird blitzes on the outer grass beds with poppers and gurglers. Mendy taught me how to make a blue or striper following a popper take it every time. Well, almost.

The Ptown boys with Gil Berke and Jeff Smith got creamed by the NW wind and were pinned down in Ptown harbor for a slow day. The best fishing was had by Bob Milbert and his son Bryan from Minneapolis with Will Raye on Monomoy who put them on an EPIC school of big bass lolling in 1 foot of water in the bottom puddle of an outflow as the tide turned. The bass were ON and hit every cast, tipping up on a stop-and-drop clouser after a follow, tails waving in the air. They EACH caught 10+ keepers or better, totaled about 20 each for the day. As Bryan put it, “what am I going to do for the rest of my life? It’s OVER!”. Well, not completely, for Bob anyway. See below. And think TUNA! Sorry, no pics.

Tuesday was FAC, and the Ptown boys took full advantage with shoals of sandeels, whales, and non-stop brutes. Isn’t there a law against a whale harassing fishermen and approaching too close? One Humpback dove 30’ away and passed right under the boat. Jeff Smith called it his best fishing day EVER! At one point with Loren and Steiner doubled up and bass breaking all around them, Gil Berke picked up a rod for a triple on keepers. See pic. All released.
