Heading to Cancun for a week. There are a few questions i have if anyone has some info it would be great.
Can you take your own equipment and do any good , or just get a charter.
If i take my own equipment what kind of license do i need to get it any.
Cancun has tons of charters, any good facts about some of the better ones.
Thanks for the help

You could do a day trip to Pesca Maya catch a Permit and be back in Cancun that evening.

I did a charter on my honeymoon an hour South of there in Puerta Aventura. Big Wahoo and Mahi-Mahi. Lots of Barracuda and did some bottom fishing for the wife. Since the reef is so close to shore you can opt for some Panga Fishing which is just a smaller boat for a fraction of the cost. I know of some people who have gone down with their own gear and surfcasted from the beaches and rocks. You would be surprised at the size of the Barracuda that inhabit near shore water.

I agree with rlbigfish173. Pesca Maya is a great choice. They pick you up at your hotel in Cancun at 0'dark 30 and you have breakfast that day at the lodge. Guides fish you a full day and have you back for a late dinner. Great bonefish and permit fishing, but bring your own gear. They have some there but if you are an experienced flyfisherman you aren't going to be satisfied with the selection.

I don't really want to disagree with Pesca maya, because it's a great spot, but I don't know if I'd be up for 7 hrs in the car (if the road is in good shape) as part of my one day fishing. Puerta Aventuras is the place to find off-shore charters- about 1 hr. south of Cancun. I've never fished "in" Cancun, but I haven't heard of any surf opportunities (doesn't mean there aren't any).
My thoughts, in no particular order:
PA off-shore trip: I like trolling (so, shoot me!). Billfish are mostly gone by now, but Dorado, Tuna and Wahoo should be all over. Tell the guy that you DON'T want to fish for Baracuda (save the baracuda trip for the Keys with the tube lure )
Cancun Lagoon baby tarpon and snook: I've seen it on this forum. Do a search for Cancun tarpon.
Cozumel bonefish- ferry to Cozumel in the morning, fish with the Euans (search here) and back in the evening- less travel time and better scenery IMO than PM.
Then, after you have "caught the bug", book a week at PM and lose your mind! :brow--126-3---127-3-
Good luck
