I'm a Massachusetts Striper and Blues fisherman who will be staying on Holden Beach, NC later this summer. Can anyone give me some local insight as to what can be caught from the beach in the summer, local shops, gear to bring, etc. I both fly fish and surf cast. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know anything about the area at all. Thanks.

Well, I don't know a lot specifically about Holden Beach, but I fish close to there around Wilmington. Expect to catch Red Drum, Flounder and Trout mostly in the surf. I'd bring an 8wt rod with clousers and such. When spin fishing, you could use cut bait, shrimp, sand fleas or a spoon. I suppose it is much the same as your saltwater fishing up north. I beleive there are several piers in that area that people fish on, if you're interested in that, use a 7' med heavy rod and 15 lb test line. You'll catch flounder, spots, drum, Spanish, Blues, sharks & skates. They fish off the end of the piers for Kings, Tarpon & Cobia. Pier fishing is pretty big in the Carolinas. Hope this helps a little. Maybe someone can give some better information about the area.

I used to live on Holden and did some fly fishing there. How late this summer? The croaker, red and black drum and flounder are inshore. Add spanish to the list for for the beach. Holden has some canals behind that fish o.k. for flounder. There are sand bars at either end by the inlets. The west end is private but you can walk that way on the beach. The pier was shortened by a hurricane and is worthless at low tide.
