coming to morehead city in sept 07, and i am bringing my inflatable creek company pontoon boat (ODC 1018-10 ft long) along with a transom mounted trolling motor. i've been reading "Fly Fishing the South Altantic Coast" trying to plan areas to put in and get to some good flats on the Nuese, Cedar Island Wildlife Refuge, Bouge Sound and other areas without having to run to far and to deep into the channels. I love this fly fishing addiction, and i cannot seem to get enough. just looking for some advice and some direction for this area. Week long trip NO WIFE and KIDS. I Need to Have a Good Time!!!!!! dont have much money for a guide, but plan on searching anyhow 12 hours a day if i have to

Drop the boat in at Cedar Island and fish the Marshes to the North for some good Redfish action in Sept.

Should be a great time to be in the area. I would recommend that you go to Gordon Churchill's website. (Actually, he will probably see your entry in the next day or so.) He is the best source of information for fly fishing in the area. Cedar Island is a beautiful spot but get one of those mosquito repellant devices from WalMart. Where there are flats and fish, there are bugs at night. We tried to camp out but decided to stay in the motel. (And flesh devouring bugs have to be pretty bad to bother me.)

Did you say your boat is an inflatable? Tons (and I mean tons) of oyster bars around here. Pretty much the main reason I fish the creeks out of an aluminuum boat instead of one of those fancy technical poling skiffs. I know what oyster bars do to gel coat and aluminum...I can only imagine what it does to inflatables. Lots of good fishing around here in September.
This video was shot last September:

The Neuse and Pamlico are huge bodies of water and no need to go up there. Plenty of good water right around Morehead and Beaufort. Stick to the Newport River and White Oak River. You may also want to check out the kayak trail from the Bear Island State Park ferry launch down near Swansboro.
I am pretty much the only guy who is specializing in this kind of fishing with a flyrod around here.
PS
Alaskan Exile, Thanks for the props.
