My osn and I and spent the last week in S.E. Alaska fishing for salmon. We fished the East Alsek river for the Sockeye and a few of the other saomon species. If you want to check your tackle these ar ethe fish to do it on, at least for eight weights. These are the failure that occurred during 5 days of fishing and spread out over 11 people:
1 TFO highsticking 8 weight
2 Sage- 1 high sticking, 1 during unexpected run 8 weight .
Here is what gets me 2 Brand new reels
1 LL BEAN
1 Orvis mid arbor
The reel both had the same failure- Broken handles! I just could not believe that. Does anyone else have broken handle reports on any of these fly reels?

I hooked and landed the first permit of my life last month in Belize, a just under 30 pounder on a 10 wt w/ a Ross Big Game V reel. At one point during the 1/2 fight I looked down at the reel and the spool had come off the arbor. Had I not caught it (completely by luck) the fight would have been over in an instant. I was in shock at what happened. These reels have been raved about.

That's not bad for all those people. FWIW, high sticking is not an equipment failure - it's operator error. ;) In my case it's usually due to short arms and big fish

You must have had a good trip.

Roger,
Yes, and the experience with the bears just added a bit of interest. The coastal range is always magnificent, and the fishing is alway interesting.
