Hi all,

I know that these questions have been posted before and I was hoping some new insight or possibilities exist. I will be visiting Punta Cana from January 3rd to January 17th 2008 and will be staying at the Malia Caribe Tropical. Is beach fishing permitted from this resort? What if anything can I expect to catch? What liscences are required? Is there any bonefish, tarpon or snook guides or DIY possibilities ( I was told that some of the golf courses might hold fishing opportunities )? I have heard this is prime time for Mahi Mahi, is there any guides that specialize in flyfishing on there charters? What about reef fishing at night for shark etc.? Anybody with any info or that has experienced any unique fishing opportunities in the area would be greatly appreciated.

I was just down there in July(Melia Caribe). I brought my fly rods with me but the only time I took them out was clearing security. I did not see anyone fishing off the beach there. The beach the hotel sits on is a long cresent that is lined with hotels. no secluded type areas. There were also guards with battons stationed along the beach. The water at the part of the beach I was on got chest high fairly quickly -not a flat however there were some grass beds not too far off the beach (spining tackle?). Additionally depending on where your room is, it could be a long walk to the beach through this very large resort (there is a tram). Going off site didn't seem like a safe option to me so I didn't try it. However there are charter boats that the hotel recommends that go deep sea if that is something that appeals to you. One last tip: try the mamajuana (look it up) which is a rum drink. The best I had was at the VIP Area pool bar but it is good else where in the resort as well! Have fun and enjoy!!
