Am planning a trip to St. Croix to do a little "family tree" pruning ( My father was born there and my grandfather was a Moravian Missionary there) and wonder whether it will be worthwhile to take my fly rod along.

Are there decent places to fish from the shore and what species are to be had?

Also any thoughts on where to stay would be appreciated. We will probably want to be there two weeks in February/ March. Maybe rent a house or cottage.

All help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

I lived on STX for ten years, didn't fish, scuba only. I went back Feb 2006 to fly fish.

Best bet: Sandy Point via Hannah's Rest Frederiksted. Park at the public pool and walk south (long walk). Be back at your car before dark, repeat be back to your car before dark. 8 or 9 wt. clousers. jacks, tarpon, snook, bones who knows.

Great Salt Pond South Shore: permit, bones, who knows. Wading OK but the water drops off fairly fast. First light wade west with the sun at your back.

Hotel on the Cay Christiansted: Take the hotel ferry boat. Fish the ocean side of the cay and the harbor side. Tarpon, jacks.

Salt River: First Landing (Columbus) snook, snapper.
